Llanfairpwllgwyngyllgogerychwyrndrobwllllantysiliogogogoch
« on: Wednesday 19 April 17 13:35 BST (UK) »
While looking for something else I came across a 1911 record where the full spelling of the above had been written on the record sheet.FindMyPast had nearly transcribed it fully and accurately, they had missed out the "p".
I wonder if it is fully transcribed accurately somewhere else....

Regards
Roger

That's impressive, since everywhere else it appears as Llanfair PG!
Suffolk: Pearl(e),  Garnham, Southgate, Blo(o)mfield,Grimwood/Grimwade,Josselyn/Gosling
Durham/Yorkshire: Sedgwick/Sidgwick, Shadforth

It's main claim to fame is for being the site of  the first Womens Institute("Jam and Jerusalem") in Britain - rather incongruous,as,when I were a lad, there was no "j" in the welsh alphabet.
I wouldn't use it as a backdrop for a panto!.

It's other claim to fame is the very long name (hey, I may be wrong  :P ) - or perhaps coach loads of tourists flock there to take a picture of the building used for the first Women's Institute building :) :)

Kids used to "sing" the name out to the coaches in return for a little tip or two to keep them in pocket money.

I don't think the Women's Institute meet in the village any more. There are a couple of other groups similar, "Merched y Wawr" (which is a bit like a Welsh W.I.) and "Monday at Eight" (they meet on a Thursday at 7pm - only joking).

I remember having pencils with it written down the side.

It was one of our 'party pieces'  as youngsters  and I can still say it and spell it after all these years   ;D

It's always difficult finding envelopes big enough to fit the whole name on. Here's one I posted some time back.

I used to live there, and enjoyed writing my address in full whenever possible.

I can't really claim that as one of its "claims to fame" though.
