The fact that I've been told South African records are difficult to find and that the tree has an actual date rather than just the year, makes me think the owner may have personal knowledge of this family. Might be worth trying to get in touch.

UK and Ireland Medical directory for 1920 - sometimes these directories are referring to the previous year - Just to show there was a John Brock 33, Western-rd. Port Elizabeth, Cape Province at that time but his occupation would not indicate it was Emmanuel John Smale Brock who was a steam crane driver in 1901

So that looks a complete red herring and a case of grabbing a similar name and making the facts fit!  ::)

I agree a red herring. My grandfather Wiliam Thomas Brock was known as Tom Brock or Thomas Brock. Would he have gone under that name?
I have found a Thomas Brock on the 1911 census being age 9 and a boarder with a Andrew Trudgeon.
As my grandfather was brought up in the Plymouth Workhouse would he have been boarded out with a family?
