Amos Jackson born c1800 - husband of Isabella Ramage
« on: Thursday 20 April 17 04:26 BST (UK) »
My great grandfather, William Jackson, was born on 17th July 1839 at High Rochester. The birth certificate gives his father as Amos Jackson, a pitman. William's mother was Isabella Jackson formerly Ramage.
*
I have found three possibilities for the baptism of Amos:
1. 3rd September 1797 in Buryness - the son of Amos of Hillock and Mary, his wife. The Ramage family lived in Buryness too, so this is a good candidate.
2. 24th February 1799 at Birdhope Craig Presbyterian - the son of John Jackson and Elioner (?) Hedley.
3. 3rd May 1807 at Thockrington - the son of Peter and Margaret Jackson.
**
1 and 2 are likely, but which is correct?
*
Marriage - I found: "At Elsdon, on the 17th instant, Mr. Amos Jackson to Miss Isabella Ramage." in the Newcastle Journal Tyne and Wear for 21 November 1835. Seems very likely.
*
I appreciate any help with this direct line of mine.
Thanks
Richard

Looks as though their last child Elizabeth was born in 1850 and the GRO index had this possible death

AMOS   JACKSON Age 50
GRO Ref 1850  March Qrtr  BELLINGHAM UNION  Vol 25  Page 167

The death cert is on a Anc family tree and is the right one - lists him as a coal miner

The 1807 baptism was for a 1801 birth https://familysearch.org/ark:/61903/1:1:NDXK-4VY

Maybe naming pattern of Amos's children might be worth comparing to the possible parents and their families  :-\

Added - Looking at the Buryness bapt -I think he is listed in the census as born 1898 Rams Hope married to Barbara and living in Hunmanby    Rams Hope Cottage is beside Byrness on Google Maps

Thank you Kay. I am eight hours behind on PST and just waking up.
The tree you found on Ancestry is probably mine. I purchased the death cert for Amos.

I don't think the 1801 birth/1807 baptism fits. We don't have any Peters in our family.
**
Which census are you referring to regarding the Buryness baptism. Do you mean the 1841 census has that Amos as born in 1798? If so, that would eliminate that possibility.
**
We do have the names John and Eleanor in our family. I am leaning towards this choice at the moment.

This is the Amos I think was bapt in 1897  in Buryness (Bryness?) https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Ramshope In 1851 living in Hunmanby, Yorkshire

Amos Jackson 53 Rams Hope, Northumberland  Coal Agent and Gate Keeper
Barbara Jackson 42  Alwinton, Northumberland

I tried to follow other Amos Jackson's born in Northumberland at about the time back to the baptisms  at  Thockrington and Birdhope Craig but no luck so far

Thank you. So it really appears as though the Byrness Amos is not our man.
**
I see another Amos Jackson married to Isabell in the 1851 census for Hollywell. He was born in 1800 at Stamfordham (which is relatively near to Thockrington).
**
Family records state that my grandfather William lost his father when he was young and I am almost(?) certain that we have the right family in the 1851 census and our Amos died in 1850.

Hi Richard

I am descended from John Jackson, who I believe was the brother of your Amos.  Amos and Isabella had a daughter Sarah.  On the 1851 census she is shown ast John's home and described as his niece.  I know that John was from Rochester (which is very near Byrness) and both he and Amos were coal miners.  Amis died in 1850 GRO d:  Bellingham Mar 1850 Vol 25 p 167.  However I cannot find a common parent yet as I have not found John's record of baptism.  I suspect Amos may be the son of John and Eleanor Hedley who was baptised 24.2.1799 at Birdhope Craig Presbyterian Chapel.  I have some details of Amos's descendants - which one are you descended from?  I am the great-great grandson of John's daughter, Mary Ann Jackson.

Kind regards

David
