charles gardner mate
« on: Thursday 20 April 17 07:33 BST (UK) »
Part of my ongoing Charles Mate and W Mate enquiries...

Charles Gardner Mate was born in 1769 to Charles and Judith.  I've not yet been able to find any further details of, say, a marriage or even a death.  Can anybody help?

Roly,
Where was Charles Gardner Mate born/baptised in 1769 or, if you haven't seen a record, where did the info come from?

Roly,
The parents at that baptism were Charles & Judith. It looks like they were married at St Dunstan, Canterbury on 25 Dec 1766 (Charles Mate & Judith Wood) by Banns.

Thanks to everybody - but I'm still no nearer knowing when Charles died or whether he had married.
Onwards and sideways!

Roly,
Still no further forward on marriage or death but you haven't mentioned his siblings and these might be worth following:
Sarah 1767, Peter 1775, Susan 1776 - All baptised Canterbury
Mary Judith 1779 - baptised Margate
Charlotte Maria 1783 - baptised Dover

Allen, Brown, West - Berkshire
Caesar, Dicker, Lamden, West - Hampshire
Hicks, Martin, Masters - Kent, Middlesex
Hancox/Hancock/Hancocke - Warwickshire
Gardner - Devon
Traylen - Essex & Jersey

Peter: I have details of siblings...that's why it's odd that there's no mention of Ch. Gardner after his birth.

And do the details of the siblings help with your search?  eg, was Charles a witness at any of their marriages, or mentioned in any of their wills if they made them (or indeed any nephews or nieces that might be his children). Did they stay in the area, or do their movements indicate the family moved, thus suggesting maybe where to look for a burial of Charles if he died in infancy. Did either of his parents leave a Will, if so was he mentioned.

DeBoo - London
Green - Suffolk
Parker - Sussex
Kemp - Essex
Farrington - Essex
Boniface - West Sussex

Ah.  That's better!  Many thanks for the pointers.  I've been unable, financially, to indulge in, say, Ancestry (do not laugh)...I did think that Charles died in infancy.  Some of the siblings can be traced elsewhere.

Will let you know how I get on.
