Help required re 2 Confederacy soldiers
« on: Thursday 20 April 17 16:28 BST (UK) »
Hi
I am trying to find out about 2 soldiers of the Confederacy who died in the American Civil War. They are Osborne Crook and Benjamin Edward Crook. Their father was William B Crook and they came from Virginia. That's all I know. Does anyone else have a way of finding out anything further.
Thanks
Paul Crook

HI. Have you found Osborne Crook in US 1850 census living in Georgia with wife and one son? That census shows him born in Virginia in 1795. Is this your man? patrexjax

Hello again. Findagrave has a Major Osborne Crook who died in October 1851 in Georgia. There is also a photo showing a monument. If this is your man, he would not have fought in the US Civil War, however, he could have been attached to some Georgia militia unit.  Since there is a move afoot to remove many Confederate monuments in the US, it might be prudent to try to capture that photo if he is a relative. The poster may be able to supply you with additional photos in perhaps a negative or original form.  I hope this helps. patrexjax

This looks like a possible "sighting" of them in Alabama.

Thanks for the replies. I'm not sure that is my Osborne but I will have a look at the photo. I didn't know Confederate monuments weren't 'popular' at the moment. The 'sighting' mentioned by Barry's is my only source at the moment. Thanks for sending it to me though. I wasn't sure if any records of Confederate deaths were online.
Thanks again
Paul Crook

"the War for Southern Independence"

Dear me, that is a euphemism for the Civil War that I have never heard before.

Osbourne laid down his life for the Confederacy on the 15 May 1864 which was the last day of the battle of Resaca, Georgia. His wife should have a pension application on file.

The system was (until the latter part of the 20th Century) was that the wife of a Confederate Soldier had to live in the Southern States to collect a pension. In other words a wife of an Alabama Soldier could move to Florida and the State of Florida would pay out. The widow a (lets say) a New York Soldier could move to California or anywhere else and the Federals would pay out.

The last Confederate Widow died in 2008.

I prefer the term "War of Northern Aggression"
