I was thinking a couple of people might have passed away they seem to disappear between census's. I found one who was 11 and worked in a woollen mill collecting wool from under the machines. I think she survived though but life must have been hard for some.

That's me Terri but some of the stuff I am finding hard to prove.

Johnstone as the place of birth does not match the birth reg for Isabella, daughter of George Evans & Margaret Renton 7 Aug 1857 in Eccles, Berwickshire.

Do you have any birth, death or marriage certificates?  This is a good way of proving who's who (although they aren't 100 percent accurate!).

If you have any specific questions, post them on here, and there'll be someone who can help you.

I don't know where you live, but if you can get to Edinburgh or Glasgow, it's definitely worth making the trip as you can spend a whole day at Scotland's People or The Mitchell Library for £15 which gives you access to BMDs in Scotland, plus the Census and much more.

If you cannot get there you can access the Scottish records online at scotlandspeople.gov.uk
There are a few help topics on the Scotland board, just below the counties, which you might find useful.

Thanks Osprey, I will take a look, are they free sites?

Hi Terri I am in the West Midlands, I am formulating some documents and highlighting questions I need to answer. I am thinking of trying to go to Scotland for a few days with my brother but I want to have a list of to do things before I go. There are some certificates I need but they are expensive (well they add up) the cheapest I found were just under £10.

at the period you're looking at here, you can see the certs on Scotlandspeople for the price of 6 credits. No need to send for certs.

You can check dates on FamilySearch for some events and that is free.

I had another thought for when you visit Scotland.  My son recently visited the Heritage Centre at Paisley Central Library, which is free to use.  He was able to look at old newspapers, and there were other resources (including Poor Law I think).

Their email address is heritage@renfrewshire.gov.uk

This sparked my interest as I have a John Crawford Steele born 1823 Neilston, Renfrew, Scotland died 1908 Alexander, County of Dunbarton, Scotland.
Other John Steele's in the tree but not in the correct year.
