Help in finding an ancestors grave
« on: Thursday 20 April 17 16:40 BST (UK) »
Hi Everyone.
I need some advice. I have recently learned that I have some relatives that dies and are buried in my home town but for the life of me I cannot find how to locate their graves, I know their names and the rough date of their death but I do not know where they are buried. I have looked on the local council web site but they only list a few church's.

Welcome from me too  :).

Often a local council has a Bereavement Service Department who can help; that's the department that deals with cemeteries. It's worth emailing them.

Also try local newspapers a week or so after the death - there may be a funeral or death announcement that details where the burial is. Depending on when the death was your relatives may have been cremated. Bear in mind too that not all graves have headstones, and some graves were shared with unrelated people.

If you are happy to give names, places & dates of death, someone here may be able to help.

Hi josey and larkspur thanks for the welcome, I will try that link thanks, My relatives graves are from 1945 and later, I checked and there are no obituaries I can find, I did find out there were no Crematoriums open then about here and when I look up churches in the area they were last known to live it just gives me the large churches, if I could find the church she and the others are probably buried in I can go there or to the civic hall and get the grave numbers (or whatever it is) and find their graves. Thanks for your input it is most appreciated.

Remember that they may not have been buried in a church cemetery - as many were full by the late 1800s - but in a municipal cemetery. There also used to be chapels in municipal cemeteries so even the funeral service may not have been in a church.
