Bridget Crabb of Hawkchurch(?) (?-1787)
« on: Thursday 20 April 17 22:51 BST (UK) »
I've taken a great interest in my father's side of the family recently, and have been struggling with my 7th great grandmother, Bridget Crabb.
So far, I know that she married Richard Smith on 26th October 1731 in Hawkchurch. From this, I have assumed she is from Hawkchurch, as the record does not say otherwise, although one point to note is that Richard hails from Bradford Abbas (not to far away, but certainly a different parish), and this is not stated in the record. She had 3 children with Richard: William (my 6th great grandfather, 1733-1792), Mary (1736-sometime before 1739), and Mary (1739-?). All three children were baptised in Bradford Abbas, and she was buried in the parish in 1787.
I've been unable to trace her within the Hawkchurch and Bradford Abbas parish records aside from this, does anyone have any ideas?
Thanks, Sophie.

Good Morning and Welcome to Rootschat.
This is a toughy but we are here to help.

I noticed that in the same year Familysearch has a marriage Bridget Crabb and Richard Smith at Allington Dorset. It gives no other details and looking through the records for Allington I can't see a record of the marriage but perhaps banns were called there and your ancestors decided to go to Hawchurch instead.

Looking at Allington there is a Crab family .
William Crabb married Eaddeth Elbe 20.2.1696

They had 3 children baptised at Allington
John Aug 1697 buried 7.10.1697
William 29.1.1698 buried 24.5.1702
Margaret 25.3.1701

William senior is buried 5.5.1728  and  Edith Crabb of Allington 11.5.1740 at Bridport

Also in the parish is a Elizabeth Crabb who married John Friend 11.7.1726 and is buried 3.5.1741.
The couple had John Friend junior 25.5.1729,George 19.12.1731 and Elizabeth 23.10.1737.
John Friend Senior is buried 2.10.1774.

It looks like William and Eaddeth Crabb had a least one more child and significantly there is a gap in the christenings at Allington 1704-1716.

I would be looking at Allington for clues .

ps there are a couple more children at Bradford Abbas for Richard and Bridget
Elizabeth 13.7.1741
Richard 12.2.1744
and the Mary 1739 is Massey 19.4.1739 buried 29.7.1740
Please don't shoot the messenger.
