Mary and Ann Powell
« on: Friday 21 April 17 08:16 BST (UK) »
I am new to Rootschat but would like to ask member's for their help please. It's a long standing one for me.

I am searching for my great great grandmother Mary Powell. I presume her dob would be early to mid 1820's but I am not sure. She may have been born in Herefordshire or around the London area. But this is what info I have so far:

My great grandmother Ann Powell was born illegitimately to Mary Powell and Henry Goodsell (I can trace him) in December 1847 in Notting Hill, Middlesex.

Ann or Annie Powell marries Richard Lloyd in 1872 in Llanigon nr Hay in 1872. I have the certificates so I know this is correct,

I can track Annie and Richard's numerous children and the family's movements in Herefordshire until the couples deaths.

What I have been trying to find, and these are the gaps- are two census returns - those being 1851 and 1861 for Annie and very importantly, to track her mother Mary at all but to no avail! I cannot track Mary at all.

Annie is described on a number of census returns as being born in Hay or Llanigon and only latterly are the correct details of Notting Hill are given on the returns.
Would anyone be able to point me in the right direct please. I have to admit, this is becoming a bit of an obsession with me.
Thank you  :)

Hi,
Ann's address on her birth certificate is noted as she was born in Silver Street in the LB of Kensington,  Paddington,  and Fulham.  Her mother Mary's address on the certificate is Aubrey Road, Kensington.
Henry Goodsell address in the 1851 census is 11 Ladbroke Terrace, St Mary's Abbotts, Kensington.
Thank you

Welcome to Rootschat

I do wonder if Mary and her daughter is living somewhere in a household under a different name, have you checked the addresses on 1851 that you already have

Pity you don't know if Mary married, it would show up her father's name

That's the thing, Mary's surname on the birth certificate is written down as Powell formerly Powell.  I am unable to track her in the 1851 census. More confusingly is that her daughter Annie turns up in the 1871 census for Llanigon nr Hay on Wye.

Are you suggesting she was  married to a Powell before she had Ann(ie)?

Can't find a baptism so far in London either

LM

PS  Henry Goodsell  was a servant on 1851, it is possible Mary might have also been a servant who came to London to work, pity we don't know exactly where Mary was born

Is she in Llanigon in 1851?

I originally thought that too, but I've scoured the marriages and can't come up with anything apart from one in Fulham 1849 to a William Powell but the woman is called Catherine!

Llanigon may be missing from the 1861 census?
