Edinburgh Gathering
« on: Friday 21 April 17 12:53 BST (UK) »
I have been sent this photograph by a distant relative of a gathering in 1906 in Edinburgh (my great-great-grandfather's brother is in the photo somewhere!). I can't make out what the writing says at the bottom beneath the men's feet and I have no clue as to what this gathering is! Any help would be greatly appreciated!

Thank you! Very interesting. Do you know what would happen at these sorts of events?

Lauren, I suspect the guys would march past the king, (Edward VII) & then be reviewed by him. It looks like Arthur's Seat behind Holyrood Palace or the slope below the Castle. Hope the guys managed a few swift haufs afterwords.  ;D

It is definitely on the lower slopes of Arthur's Seat (as suggested by Skoosh) just across the road from Holyrood Palace. This lovely park in the centre of Edinburgh used to be called the King/Queen's Park depending on who the monarch was. Nowadays it is usually referred to as Holyrood Park.

I have seen many a parade there including "Beating the Retreat" which is a spectacular event with the pipes and drums of the Scottish Regiments. Nowadays I think this happens on the Castle Esplanade. Happy memories although I don't go back quite as far as 1906. ;) ;)

The Argyll & Sutherland Highlanders known as Princess Louise's Own. She was a daughter of Queen Victoria and Colonel In Chief of the Regiment. The regimental museum is in Stirling Castle and well worth a visit if you are ever in Stirling.

What a wonderful photograph to have Lauren. Lucky you.

Dorrie.

I'm sure you would be able to find a newspaper report of the event.
