Whinnie Road,Paisley?,Renfrewshire.
« on: Friday 21 April 17 23:05 BST (UK) »
Hi,
Can any one give me the location of the above road? It existed in 1900,but I can't find any mention on Google Maps.
I don't think it was in a built up area.

Thanks

Never heard of this or Whinny or Whinny Hill and was brought up in Paisley :( Can you say in what context you have seen this road name?

Hi Caroline,

It is a bit of a mystery.
I was following up a "culpable homicide" 19th May 1900. A local paper the P & RG reprted this as

 “The Whinnie Road mystery"

The Chief Constable for the County intimated that a warrant had been issued for the apprehension of a miner on a charge of culpable homicide.
Also, the Polie Gazette referred to the incident occuring in the Yonderton area.

The "Mysterious Affair at Paisley" is mentioned in the Glasgow Herald of 22/5/00 P.4 of 11 and 23/5/00 P.6 of 14 re the passing of Andrew Hamilton of 18 Springbank Avenue. Looks like he passed on 22/5/00. Have you got his Death Certificate?

I cannot see this road but I'm wondering if it was just the way a road was referred to in the area as there would have been a large number of horses around. My Great Grandfather himself having them in his occupation of flesher and living on Inchinnan Road which is just a hop, skip and a jump from Springbank Road. There is still a farm where you can pick strawberries yourself called Yonderton (perhaps East Yonderton) which is on the opposite side of Glasgow International Airport from Springbank Road but in 1900 would not have been that far away if there were roads crossing that area.

Hope this helps.

East Yonderton is where described by Caroline - Yonderton Farm and West Yonderton Farm were both nearby and described as being off of Inchinnan Road - around the area where the Airport is now.
Having spent much of my working life in Paisley I must admit I have never heard of Whinny/Whinnie Road although there were a lot of roads which had local names which didn't relate to anything on maps (many of these roads didn't have names on the maps).

Added - I wonder if the walk he took referred to the old towing path which ran alongside the river

A 1933 newspaper, reporting a collision, mentions:

near the junction the Greenock and the Whinny road near Paisley
