Ballinasloe Workhouse Orphans
« on: Saturday 22 April 17 04:54 BST (UK) »
I'm trying to trace my ggg grandmother, Mary Mitchell, who was sent to Australia aboard the Lady Kennaway in 1848 from the Ballinasloe Workhouse. Her father was Jno Mitchell. She married Samuel Tomkins Rees in 1849 in Victoria, Australia. Does anyone else have these people in their family?

thanks rathmore, I've got a lot of information about Mary Mitchell after she leaves Ireland and starts her new life in Aus but I'm trying to find out the circumstances of her being an orphan. I'm wondering whether she still had a living parent that could no longer support her or whether both parents had passed when she was placed in the Ballinasloe workhouse.

I wonder is this her baptism July 1832 LINK
(4th entry down on the right hand side - page 363)
Parents Jno Mitchel and Catherine Kean

with a brother Patt in January 1830 LINK
(6th entry down on the right hand side - page 282)

There is a marriage for Jno Mitchel and Catherine Kean on Feb 09 1829 LINK
(last entry on the left hand side - page 247)

There are births/baptisms for several Mary Mitchels but this seems the best match
There are however two other marriages for a Jno/John Mitchel at that time
to Mary GRADY Feb 23 1829; and
to Ann CLARK Jan 25 1832

edited to add
Mary GRADY-MITCHEL died Apr 06 1830; she had a son baptised on April 05 1830 - Peter
There does not seem to be other children to this couple and they could be ruled out.

thanks myluck, I've a hopeful feeling you might be onto something there. I'd come up with that also and looking into them more there are many names connected to that marriage. many of the witness names are related. I'm think Jno Mitchell had a brother Mich. There's an Honor that marries a Mitchell who is a godmother to a child and the surname Egan that has a couple of connections also. Will need to look into this further.

Thanks. We seem to have a lot of the same records there. Interestingly, Jno Mitchell and Cath Kean also had a Mary Mitchell baptised the year before my Mary. She possibly died and as they often did named the next child the same. That needs further investigating  That still puts a three gap before the first Mary's birth and I've found a baptism record for a John mitchel with the same parents names but no year. Quite a few leads to follow.
