Donald Macdonald, South Uist
« on: Sunday 23 April 17 15:39 BST (UK) »
I would like to identify which Donald Macdonald this is. I think he was born in 1898 on South Uist and enlisted in the Cameron Highlanders in WW1. He was wounded three times and survived the war, writing eloquently about his experiences. As a starting point, I would like to place who his parents were and any siblings he may have had.

Have you looked at the WWI Service records on any of the subscription sites?  There is one entry b 1896 South Uist Reg number 5544 enlisted 1913 Queen's Own Cameron Highlanders aged 17

If he married or died in Scotland, a copy of his marriage/death cert will give you his parents names

The 1901 has 2 entries born South Uist and a couple b North Uist.  One of the Sth Uist entries b Snishbale 1898 enlisted in the Scots Guards

Are you descended from one of his children/grandchildren?

Good find Ev

Now that his date of death is known - parental info can be obtained by buying a copy of his death cert.

Perhaps buying the book may also give info as to his wife etc which would help trace his marriage

Great stuff and thank you. I am a Trustee of Scotland's War (1914-1919), an educational charity registered in Scotland. We are currently building a new website telling the story of Scotland at home and abroad during the Great War. At the moment I am doing some work on our Western Isles section, hence my enquiry.
