Burial records - Launceston
« on: Sunday 23 April 17 16:45 BST (UK) »
Can anyone advise me on how I can find burial records for Launceston 1960? If so might they be available to view online? If someone lived in Egloskerry but the death cert. shows Launceston might that be that they were buried in Launceston and not a church nearer to Egloskerry? I do not know the area and am hoping to visit quite soon so any help or advice would be much appreciated.

The burial could be in either place or another place entirely. It all depends whether the deceased expressed a desire to be buried in a particular place (said to family before their death or stated in their will), if not it would be left to the best judgement of the next of kin as to what the deceased would have wanted.

Do you mean that their normal place of abode was Egloskerry but they actually died at an address in Launceston?

Hi SmallTownGirl. Thanks for the link but it only goes up to 1940 unfortunately.

LizzieL the person I'm looking for lived all their life in Egloskerry but the listing for the death shows Launceston but if that is the nearest large town then that is probably why. Not knowing the area but thinking it is probably going to be vey rural I wondered if it might not have a church of it's own. I didn't think that I would have much difficulty finding out where they were buried as it is in the relatively recent past - wrong. Of course, there is always the possibility that they might have been cremated. Is there any way to find this out do you think? I was thinking about looking for the death announcement in local papers. Probably the Noth Devon Journal?

If they died in Egloskerry their death would be registered in Launceston, because that's the registration district Egloskerry came under (until 2007). Since 2007 the registration district is Cornwall.

A few years ago we were trying to find where my OH's grandparents were buried. Both died in the 1950's. They were his father's parents, but his father had died some years before our quest started so we had no-one to ask where they might have lived. All we had was a photo of his father's sister by what looked like a new grave in a rural churchyard and the knowledge it was somewhere in Hertfordshire or Essex. Our first move was to get death certs of both of them to find their address at time of death. That led us to a village with only one church, which give or take 50 years could have looked like the right graveyard. We were very fortunate that there was a notice in the church with churchwardens details and we arranged to meet and see a copy of the burial register for that period which was still in use at the church. Both burials were there in the same plot with no headstone.

details of how to contact Cornwall Council maintained cemeteries here

https://www.cornwall.gov.uk/advice-and-benefits/deaths-funerals-and-cremations/cornwall-council-cemeteries/

The opcs have more records than the ones transcribed on the database, so you could ask the opc for Egloskerry to check the church records

http://www.opc-cornwall.org/Par_new/e_g/egloskerry.php

or contact the church
