Amos Williams 1837
« on: Monday 24 April 17 05:53 BST (UK) »
Hi
I am looking for Elizabeth the mother of Amos Williams 1837-1906 who was at Ruardean Hill.

Amos' oldest brother was Samuel Hall Williams 1817-1874. He seems to have been baptised twice, once at Mitcheldean March 1817 and again at Drybrook July 1818.

Elizabeth was born in Broad Oak about 1800 but I cannot find the birth of Elizabeth Hall. Can someone help please?
Thanks
Roger

I just found the marriage of Elizabeth Hall in 1816 at Walford on http://forest-of-dean.net
Very useful. Samuel Hall was a witness to the marriage.

On the Forest of Dean records, when John WILLIAMS married Elizabeth HALL 16 December 1816 at Walford, they were both extraparochially.

There may be a lead, by using the Advance Search for e.g. Samuel HALL around the same time

John HALL (bachelor) residence: Awre

Hannah HALL (spinster) : residence: Arlingham

with parents consent.

? Marriage at Walford: 26 May 1819

banns: both sign

? are these boat people going up and down the Severn (Broad Oak is around Newnham)

Thank you, that was a great help.

Samuel Hall who married Hannah Morgan (from Ruardean) was born in Langarren, Herefordshire about 1794 according to 1851 census. There is a Broad Oak in Herefordshire to the west of Llangarron. It now seems likely that Elizabeth Hall came from this Broad Oak in Herefordshire born about 1799.  Perhaps Samuel and Elizabeth were brother and sister. Samuel, Elizabeth  and her son Samuel Hall Williams all got married in Walford about 10 miles away from Llangarron. Walford is 3 miles from Ruardean.

I have drawn a blank with Broad Oak in Hereford, so I have gone back to Broad Oak on the River Severn. William and Elizabeth Hall had their children baptised at Westbury, and John and Sarah Hall had their children baptised at Newnham about 1800.  No Elizabeth Hall born 1799-1800 showing up yet  ???

?

Elizabeth WILLIAMS (nee HALL) gives her year of birth around 1800

?

As she married 16 December 1816 - (aged 16?) normally at this age .... consent of parents/friends should be on the marriage entry.   ? Was she older

Thanks. She may have been 17 or 18 at her marriage. I have had a close look at the 1851 census. The writing is fairly clear that she is 51 and not 57.  The 1841 census also points to a younger age (40-44)(at Dean Forest). If her death is the one at Westbury in late 1853 (age 54) then it points to her birth in 1799 in Broad Oak, Gloucester.  She married in Dec 1816, her son Samuel was baptised in March 1817!

Please see my post "Samuel Hall born 1794 1795 Llangarron" for the next chapter in this saga. I now think that there is a possibility that Amos' mother (Elizabeth Hall) was Betty Hall chr at Llangarren 4 Jan 1801. Llangarron is not far from Broad Oak, Herefordshire.
