LILLIS, George- Victoria
« on: Monday 24 April 17 07:13 BST (UK) »
Hi everyone.

My ancestor George Lillis immigrated to Victoria, Australia around the years 1854-1860. He left Co. Clare in Ireland to move to Australia. He resided in White Hills, Victoria, where he married another Irish lady by the name of Mary McKenna in 1860. They had three children; Charles Lillis, Bridget Corbett (nee Lillis) and Ellen Prest (nee Lillis). George died in 1914 and is buried in White Hills Cemetery, Victoria.

I've looked on PROV and can't find any information as to his immigration from Ireland, but also, I know nothing of the descendants of him and his wife (apart from Ellen Prest's side). I would love to perhaps get in contact with any other Lillis' descended from Charles or Corbett's descended from Bridget and James- perhaps they have more information than I do.

I know that George Lillis' parents were a Thomas Lillis and a Bridget ODea, but I know nothing more.

Thank you,
Emmerson.

"...I know that George Lillis' parents were a Thomas Lillis and a Bridget ODea...?

Where have you found this information?

Possibly a relative -

Argus 23 May 1863  p4
http://trove.nla.gov.au/newspaper/article/6485963?

KELLY—LILLIS. — On the 16th ult., at St. Francis's Cathedral, Melbourne, by the Rev. P. A. Courtenay, John Kelly, eldest son of Mr. James Kelly, Scrahan, Co. Kerry, Ireland, to Anne, eldest daughter of the late Mr. Peter Lillis, Co. Clare, Ireland.

You need to see the 1914 death certificate which would ask for "years in the colony".

You need to see the 1914 death certificate which would ask for "years in the colony".

Hi there, thank you for your help. The reason I believe George's parents are Thomas and Bridget is because I have a chart in my possession that states the names of George's parents as them-however without any other information. This is definitely not concrete proof- far from it, but all the other information on this chart has been verified by my research, including finding wills, birth certificates, death certificates etc. So I know that all the other information on the chart is legitimate (that was the only thing I had to conduct my research at first), I'm assuming that whoever produced this chart (I don't know who) somehow found a piece of information that led them to believe that Thomas and Bridget were George's parents. However, I'm not taking this as gospel, not until I find some definite proof.

I had a look at the Vic BDM site, and the death certificate was there. However, would they put the whole of the certificate, for example, all categories, on the site? There was a vast difference between George's and his wife's, as his wife's listed her parent's names on there, and George's didn't. It also didn't mention anything about years in the colony. I'm wondering if it's for the reason that they want people to buy a copy with the rest of the information on instead of just viewing it online? Will I have to buy the actual copy to access all the information?

Unfortunately, as I'm not quite an adult yet, I'm not able to purchase things online.

Thanks for your help though!

Bottom of the page is surnames interest board.

Thank you! I do not have the entirety of it, no. I've only seen online versions, as I'm not able to purchase anything online.

And thank you for that point about the surname interest boards, I hadn't seen those before, I'll make good use of them.

Thank you for that information. Truthfully, I had not thought about variations on the name, and I did not really think about any more children for George and Mary, as the original three were the only ones mentioned in her will. Perhaps they died young, or moved overseas or simply got on her bad terms. Looks like there is more research in store for me,
Thank you!
