William GRAINGER, born 1837, Middlesex (?)
« on: Monday 24 April 17 13:44 BST (UK) »
Hello,

William GRAINGER was sentenced at the Old Bailey on 18/08/1851 to transportation for 7 years for stealing a tame rabbit.  His documentation stated that his next of kin (no names given) were resident at 6 Park Road, Kilburn.   He was removed to Parkhurst Prison, not transported, but eventually released on licence on 12/06/1856.   He stated his destination on release to be 10 Holly Mount, Hampstead.

Despite extensive research through the Census returns and BDM Indexes I have been unable to retrieve any information for a William GRAINGER that bears a relationship to those addresses.  His trial report contains a mention of St. Anne's Gardens that, sadly, do not appear in the London A-Z.   Possibly I am missing something ??? :'(

Hopefully someone can help.

Reynolds Newspaper Sunday 23rd Feb 1851

Charge of Robbery.

William Granger a boy of 12yrs of age, who was recently tried and convicted of felony, was brought
up in custody charged with the robbery.
The evidence went to show that the prisoner was an errand-boy in the service of Mr Johns, builder,
Park Road, Kilburn-gate.

Yesterday morning he received from his master, 11sh. to purchase some lime, but instead he
absconded with the money.

He was taken into custody by P.C.Brand who met with him this morning in Henry St.Portland Town
He admitted having spent the greater part of the cash, buying a pair of trousers and a neck-tie,
.When told he was charged with robbery, said "Very well, it dont matter much"
Remanded for a week.

Thank you Jackie,

An interesting reference and one I had not uncovered before, although it seems he was not sentenced as no records exist, neither as GRAINGER nor GRANGER.   He only had one previous conviction documented in November 1850 for which he received 7 days imprisonment.

However, the main point is that he was working in Park Road, Kilburn, which he confirmed was the place in which his next of kin lived ::)

For now,

On the Old bailey online site there is an account dated 18/08/1851 of William Grainger aged 13 stealing a tame rabbit from Thomas Chittenden, is that the trial you are looking for

Hello Jolee,

Thank you for your note.

I mentioned in my posting that in his trial at the Old Bailey St. Anne's Gardens were referred to and I was trying to establish where they were as there was no entry in the London A-Z.   I had hoped they would give me an indication if they were in KIlburn or Hampstead, the two places William GRAINGER talked about.

In 1851 a Henry Johns was living at 6 Park Road but shown as in Paddington.

In 1861 10 Holly Mount was occupied by a Gardener and Florist.

Googling shows St. Annes Gardens are in Ealing, NW London - all in the same general area.

Annette,

Thank you for the details............possibly all within "walking distance".

The reference to 6 Park Road which he gave as the address for his next-of-kin was also the address of his employer (see Jackie's posting above).   The common denominator being Henry JOHNS, who originated from Exeter, Devon and seemingly having no connection.  Curiouser and curiouser :o :o

years.

Jackie,

Sadly, I have not been able to retrieve any BDM/Census details that vaguely fit his profile.
