McCormack in York, Ontario
« on: Monday 24 April 17 14:12 BST (UK) »
I am looking for any information regarding an Alexander McCormack, John McCormack and Thomas McCormack. They are listed in the Toronto City and Home District Directory for 1837 as living on Lot 1, Concession 2 east of Yonge Street. I do not know if they are father and sons or all three brothers. The spelling of their surname is unusual. They would have been farmers I would imagine considering the early date. Any information would be very much appreciated. Thank you in advance.

Hi,

1878 County Atlas has a Mrs McCormack and a George McCormack owning that piece of property.

1852 census shows John McCormack and family and Alexander McCormack and family... in York.  Both are farmers

Looks like Thomas and family on the next page.

All 3 are from Ireland.  John is 56, Alexander is 52 and Thomas is 48.

Excellent information for which I am very grateful. Thank you so much. At least now I have ages and places of birth to work with.

Are there any McCormack family members still living in York in the 1881 census? It would appear that since Mrs. McCormack was listed on the 1878 map that she probably was the widow of John McCormack. Similarly, John's family was the only one who named a child George who was also listed on the 1878 map.

Possible 1871 - York East.  2 McCormack families side by side.  First one has Lydia and Robert of the right ages to be the children of Alexander.  Second family is a John and Elizabeth with son George.  George is the right age to be the George from 1852...but the parents ages don't quite fit.  Names and location fit though.

Hi Pudge,

There are a lot of online Toronto area directories here:
http://www.torontopubliclibrary.ca/history-genealogy/lh-digital-city-directories.jsp

I looked through a few at random, so to save you time:
1850 Directory, on pdf page 296 of 435 there is a John McCormack at lot 8 con 11, and John McCormack at lot 23 con 2.

1862 has a widow Margaret, wife of George on Brock St.  pdf page 91 of 304

1880 has a handful of McCormack's on pdf page 183 of 552.

I may very well have missed some, as some of the directories list individuals according to area as opposed to an entire list for the whole area.

Hope this helps!
