Watson - Hoggarth help
« on: Monday 24 April 17 21:11 BST (UK) »
I am looking for help with Joseph Watson and his parents Thomas and Ann

Joseph Watson was allegedly born about 1795 at Egton (I do not have a record of this)

Joseph married Grace Stowpe on 19 Sept 1819 at Whitby. I have a copy of this record and it does NOT mention other family members.

What I would like is to find Joseph's baptism record (he may be a catholic so this may be a problem) as this should confirm his parents.

His parents are alleged to be Thomas Watson and Ann Hogarth and I would like to find a marriage for them too

(Just to make it a bit more difficulty it is believed that Thomas and/or Ann were Catholics at least some of the time)

Any help would be appreciated
James Stott c1775-1850. James was born in Yorkshire but where? He was a stonemason and married Elizabeth Archer (nee Nicholson) in 1794 at Ripon. They lived thereafter in Masham. If anyone has any suggestions or leads as to his birthplace I would be interested to know. I have searched for it for years without success. Thank you.

Have you tried North Yorkshire County Record Office?  They have transcripts for St Anne's RC, Ugthorpe - baptisms 1788-1840, marriages 1795-1827, deaths 1794-1827 and cemetery 1734-1745.

For St Hedda's RC, Egton Bridge NYCRO only have later records - microfilms & transcripts - baptisms 1813-1899, marriages 1836-1899, burials 1836-1902 and confirmation register 1837-1898.  The RC baptisms sometimes list the names of the godparents.

These details are all in their Guide No. 7 list of Non-Conformist church & chapel registers. (my copy is dated January 2007 so they may have acquired more registers since then)

I'm not sure if any of the above are on FindMyPast.  They seem to list only Guisborough, Redcar & Skelton when you search under North Yorkshire Non-conformist baptisms & "browse baptism place".

There's also St Hilda's, Whitby.  NYCRO have baptism transcripts 1792-1840.

In the area there's also St James, Lealholm which may come under Glaisdale at NYRO.

I have a couple who married in 1864 at St Hilda's parish church, Danby but the Whitby Gazette has a line stating "at the Catholic Chapel, Ugthorpe."   I wonder if they had two ceremonies.

Thank you for those suggestions they are all useful. I did find a link on here yesterday to the catholic fhs but it seems to not be active.

I am not sure how much is on findmypast but from my preliminary look the answer seems to be not much. Still what is there may be useful to eliminate some options. Using FindMyPast and ancestry together should give me some help is only for elimination purposes)

I am hoping to go to the SOG library on Saturday and see what they have. They do have some Whitby and Egton records so I hope to find something

(The purpose of this searching is myself and a DNA match across the pond are trying to work out where our common ancestor is and we "think" these two may be helpful in finding that).

Hi Davidft,

Not got anything that will help but I have a Rebecca Watson that shows on the 1851 census as born in Whitby. She married a Joseph Dodman in Lynn (now Kings Lynn) in Norfolk.  Should you come across a Rebecca born C.1780 I would be VERY interested.

Thanks and god luck.

Hi

I have added Rebecca Watson c1780 to my list. I will let you know if I find anything in due course.

And it's ALL CHANGE.

Rebecca Watson was her married name. Rebecca Brown Married John Watson (a sailor) in Jan 1802.

So now I am looking for a death of a John Watson between Jan 1802 and September 1807.

So any help on that would be great.

I have checked the Whitby St. Mary's PRs and if they are complete I can't see him in it.

Likewise I cannot see him on the National Burial Index (First Edition) .

So I'm wondering if he did at sea or something.

Hi davidft, you are probably already sorted but I was at Egton today and chatting to one of the residents she thinks that the registers are still at the Catholic church so it might be worth contacting them directly.
