Advice requested on name differences
« on: Tuesday 25 April 17 07:07 BST (UK) »
Hi,
Thanks for reading.
I am trying to work out why my ancestors name on his marriage records would state his name was Jo. Flett but on his daughters birth certificate it would state Adam Flait. The surnames I am okay with as both are variations on the surname Flett but the first name is stumping me.

Here are the details
Jo. Flett married Ann Groundwater Firth and Stenness,Orkney,Scotland 01 Jan 1734

Daughter Katharine Flett born 06 May 1744 to Adam Flett and Ann Groundwater, Firth and Stenness, Orkney, Scotland

Any advice would be appreciated. I have been unable to locate Adam Fliat ( Flett) in the Orkney birth records so maybe he might be listed under what Jo. stands for
Thank you

Sorry the daughters birth certificate should read Adam Flait ( Flett variation)

It could be a simple error by whoever wrote it in the register.  I had one that had me stumped for quite some time, but when I obtained a copy of the original parish register I found a note had been added some years later and signed by two church officials stating that the wrong name had been entered originally.  This correction had not been added on the Bishops Transcript, which therefore shows only the wrong name.

Did they have any other children, and if so was the father recorded as Adam or Jo[hn]?

Hi and thank you for the replies
They did have another child Marjory Flett who is showing with Adam Flett. I think you are right Jomot that it may just be a simple error.
