Polish ancestors - sielicki/magda
« on: Tuesday 25 April 17 15:24 BST (UK) »
I am looking for information about my ancestors who married in Britain in 1949.  Josef Sielicki married Helena Magda Dec Qtr 1949 Rochdale, Lancashire.
He was born 12th Aug 1916 possibly in Belarus - she was born poss 1919 in a village near Krakow.
I don't know when they came to England - I think they met over here.
I have looked to see if there are any free records online but haven't had any success.

Does anyone know how I can find their birth records and if there are any details of them entering the country which can be accessed?

Please can anyone help?

Thank you for your reply.  Can you give websites or addresses where I could search for these records.  That would be really great!!

just to let you know on both Freebmd and Lancashirebmd it is Jozef with a z and not an s :)
did you notice in the same qtr in Rochdale Robert Sielicki to Cecylia Plociennik - I wonder if they were brothers and had a double wedding ??
both marriages on Lancashirebmd are down as Rochdale Register office or Registrar attended ( possibly Roman Catholic church )

Thank you for your replies.  I am not sure how relevant the second e-mail is. I believe Helena Magda was born in or near Krakow.  I don't know much about Poland but am interested in anything I can find.

I have the feeling that they came into the UK via a displaced persons camp after WWII.  These camps were run by UNRRA between 1945 and 1947 and then the IRO until they were no longer needed in 1952.

In Australia each person coming into the country has their IRO/immigration record kept at the National Archives, which is where I found my wife's family's records.  I wonder if the same occurred in the UK?

Thanks for that - every little thing is useful. They married in 1949 so must have come at the end of the war, I presume.  I will try to find out if we have such records.

I think in the UK they were called European Volunteer Workers rather than displaced persons.
