Susan's surname
« on: Wednesday 26 April 17 11:36 BST (UK) »
Please can anyone decipher Susan's surname on this 1663 marriage record at Little Chesterford Essex. Various sites have it transcribed as Reeve but I think it looks as if there's something before the "r" and then "ea" and a single letter after "ea".
Berks / Oxon: Eltham, Annetts, Wiltshire (surname not county), Hawkins, Pembroke, Partridge
Dorset / Hants: Derham, Stride, Purkiss, Sibley
Yorkshire: Pottage, Carr, Blackburn, Depledge
Sussex: Goodyer, Christopher, Trevatt
Lanark: Scott (soldier went to Jersey CI)
Jersey: Fowler, Huelin, Scott

It does look like something before the R but then again it looks like a capital R rather than a small r.  Creak or Creag - could it be a G flourish at the beginning  :-\

Do the same couple christen any  other children in the years either side, maybe with a clearer entry?

A tricky one without more text to compare, but I would go with Skewe although the capital S is different from the one in Susan

Ignore that stupid suggestion - just realised it is a marriage, not a christening!

Though it might still be useful to look through neighbouring years. If her family were in the village she may well have had siblings who married, so you may find a surname looking similar but clearer that might be worth pursuing.

Thanks for all your comments. Here's a larger bit, including some capital "R"s

Thanks for the bigger clip.

That upwards attacking-stroke on the first letter is often found on K. I would say it begins Ke.... It might end v or r or even t. Very hard to say.

ADDED - I'm tempted to suggest Kent, because there are so many of that name in Great/Little Chesterford, including some with the same first names as Robert and Susan's children (e.g. Grace Kent and Daniel Kent). But I'm not convinced the 3rd letter is n.
