Finding gravesites
« on: Thursday 27 April 17 02:38 BST (UK) »
I will be travelling from Canada to Scotland next month and would like to visit the grave sites of my grandparents located in 2 separate Glasgow cemeteries.

One is Riddrie and the other is Sighthill. I have the actual lair numbers and locations. My concern is like many old cemeteries they are unkept without any signage or markers for direction. Ideally I was hoping each would have either a custodian on site or even a management office to contact for assistance.

I would welcome any advice on how best to pursue assistance to help me in my search. DC

Welcome from me too  :)

In addition to Dawn's link, have a look here www.glasgowfamilyhistory.org.uk/ExploreRecords/Pages/Burial-Lair-and-Cremation-Registers.aspx

You will see links to maps for different cemeteries at the bottom. Both the cemeteries you mention are large, so even though maps will help you narrow down the relevant section area, you are likely to still need some help there.

One technique that can be used is to try and use the commemorative War casulties' gravestones for reference on locations. These are in the main well mantained and easily idetifiable normally. If you can find one CWGC reference near to what you are looking for, it may help you identify the lair you are looking for.

Riddrie - www.cwgc.org/find-war-dead.aspx?cpage=1&sort=name&order=asc
Sighthill - www.cwgc.org/find-war-dead.aspx?cpage=1

Hopefully, you will get more precise locations!

D.Curry, there are guys on-site at both these cemeteries & they have the lair map. Have you checked this site for headstones? both cemeteries covered.
