World War II - Australian Bomardier Frederick Bannister Hackett
« on: Thursday 27 April 17 02:48 BST (UK) »
Hi, Not sure if I have this in the correct section, but basically I am trying to find more records in regard to our relation Frederick Bannister Hackett b. 10.10.1910 Longsight, Manchester England, he migrated to Australia as a young child with his parents Thomas & Charlotte Hackett.

I am trying to find more records on Frederick Hackett in regard to his time during World War II
He enlisted at Paddington near Sydney aged 29 years in 1939 No. NX54061.   He was a Bombardier in the Army 2nd A.I.F., have found no records other than he was imprisoned in Japan.  Family believed that he died whilst a Prisoner-of-War in Japan, but we find in Commonwealth Graves Records that he was killed on the 25th December, 1944 aged 34 years, and that he was buried at Ambon Cemetery, Indonesia.

I would be very grateful if anyone out there could give me some indication where I can get more details, of where he served during the 2nd World War, and what happened thereafter.

Regards
Jan

Several items here at the Australian National Archives.  You can get a quote for the cost of getting the unopened items sent to you and digitized.

Australian War Memorial has these little bits about him and the Tan Toey camp.  Not a nice place to be at all.

Mirl,
Thanks for that, I think maybe that will be enough information now, appreciate your assistance.
We can safely say that Fred Hackett was at the Theatre of War in Ambon, and died in the Prisoner of War Camp.   Need to pass this information on to his family in England.

regards
Jan
