Wellington Archives Visit
« on: Thursday 27 April 17 11:08 BST (UK) »
Hello,

I have been tracking down my mysterious g g grandfather John Lane from Dunedin who deserted his wife and children in Melbourne. I have found a file held by the Wellington Archives which is 4 pages. Here is a link:

https://www.archway.archives.govt.nz/ViewFullItem.do?code=24464817

I am told by the researchers that this document states how John came to be in Dunedin. I wasn't sure if she meant originally around 1870 (when he first came to Dunedin from the UK), or after he went back to Dunedin after deserting his wife in Melbourne in 1890 - which we knew about. We have no knowledge of where in England John came from as we have no passenger list details and no marriage certificate, only one child was registered and it didn't list parents birthplace. We do not know where he ends up either.

If anyone is going to the office in the future would you mind having a quick glance at this report for me (I live in Perth so not so quick trip for me) and kindly let me know if it gives any details of where John might have come from originally?

I would greatly appreciate it.

Karen.

Not a problem ... have some other look-ups to do so can easily slot it in.  Besides, I'd also like to know just what your John LANE got up to.   ;D

Thanks Lu, I was thinking of sending you a PM originally but didn't want to impose. You have been such as great wealth of knowledge helping me with my family tree  ;)

Apparently this report also states John's employer whilst in Dunedin as well. I am just hoping it gives us a little more info in helping us to figure out where he came from.

Hi Minniehaha,

Thankyou for the link, we actually found that information in the Victorian Police Gazette.

Good to know that the NZ police gazette is online though - is that a new thing? Couldn't remember searching through that last year.

Karen.
