11th Hussars
« on: Thursday 27 April 17 14:26 BST (UK) »
Years ago (in 1985) my Dad was sent this information about:

1434 Private William Horseman
11th Hussars

Enlisted 1949
Promoted corporal
in Confinement 22-25 Apr 1855
Reduced to Private 25 Apr 1855
Letter Duty May %& June 1855
Awarded Crimean Medal with clasps for Alma & Sebastopol

Apparently he did NOT have the clasp for Balaclava

Can anyone suggest where his records may be located?  I've looked on the National Archives site, and cant see anything which would suggest records for this period of time.
Records must exist somewhere, otherwise where would the above information have been found.

Thanks

Sue

Could be from the muster rolls and paylists, or from regimental archives.

The Crimea medal rolls are searchable on Ancestry ("All UK, Military Campaign Medal and Award Rolls").

Agree with ShaunJ.  If from the muster books, then the service info came from the relevant documents among these: http://discovery.nationalarchives.gov.uk/browse/r/h/C2460817

The medal rolls ShaunJ referred to do confirm clasps for Alma and Sebastopol only.

Thanks for the replies - it would seem that its the Muster Rolls that may have provided the enlistment, promotion and demotion information.

Thanks for that. I'd seen the Army 1851 index,  but was so hung up on his army exploits that I didnt cross ref the actual census.  I know exactly who he is now.  He married in 1859 in Lewes RD and in 1861 he was an innkeeper at Waddon Croydon.
