Can anyone solve the connection?
« on: Thursday 27 April 17 20:11 BST (UK) »
I recently purchased some medals at auction
consisting of
Henry Scott 17451 11th battalion border regiment...the Lonsdales survived the war but wounded ( lived in Workington Cumbria)
Percy Hodgson 13771 West Riding Regiment died of wounds ( lived in Tosside Yorkshire)
his brother
Tom Hodgson 26671 Grenadier Guards KIA ( lived in Tosside Yorkshire)
The medals all came from the descendants of Henry Scott who did not know anything about them
i have found a lot of information about all the individuals
but can anyone throw any light on why all the medals ended up in the the possession of Henry Scott
i have tried to find a family link but so far have been unsuccessful
can anyone help throw some light on this
I suppose he could have collected them

Perhaps like you - he purchased them.  Henry survived WW1 - so perhaps he became a collector of WW1 medals

Presumably Percy and Tom were related? Maybe as Carole said he was a collector, but it seems a little odd if they were the only two he bought.

The wording of the post gives the impression there were more than just the ones mentioned - perhaps furzefarm could clarify if that's the case.

Perhaps Henry Scott married a Hodgson girl who eventually inherited the medals from the parents.

FreeBMD shows about 20 marriages of a Miss Hodgson to a Mr. Scott in the period 1912-1935, all in the north of England.

Percy and Tom were brothers
There were 3 medals awarded to Henry and two each to Percy and Tom a total of 7
It does seem odd that if he was a collector he just had the two brothers medals
It would be great to establish a direct family connection

It may be an idea to change the wording of the 'Subject' Heading to include the names of the people if there's enough room, if not then at least their surnames?

People can relate to names better than the heading you have & surnames are more likely to be found on a 'google' search.

Who did Henry Scott marry?

I wonder if we also need to look for a Miss Scott marriage to either Percy or Thomas Hodgson, both of whom, if I read it correctly died in the war between 1914 and 1918? Do you have Henry Scott in the 1901 or 1911 census, did he have sisters? Perhaps one was widowed, never remarried and left her husband and brother in law's medals to her husband?

Another way, as the brothers died in the war, would be to see if you can find out who claimed the medals as Next of Kin.
