Information-Acess Wills On-line?
« on: Thursday 27 April 17 20:29 BST (UK) »
I am trying to sort out the Grattan's who lived in Glaskerbeg, Down, Ireland. I know my 2x Great Grandfather William Grattan married a Mary Hill. I can't find out when he was born or died, but found an entry for Wills that says: William Grattan-Glaskerbeg, Vol. 4 Dromore, Newry & Mourne Probate and resident year 1826. This might be my 3x Great Grandfather? My question is where can I find out what is written in the Volume 4. I have found some entries for Grattans from Glaskerbeg with different death dates and just a small line on date of death and who the estate is left to. By viewing the actual volumes of these records, like the above one for William Grattan, would there be more to see in hoping to connect brothers, cousins etc. as there are so many Grattans in Glaskerbeg, but I don't know who is related to who and they are my ancestors for sure!!! So frustrating as I am almost there, but don't know where else to connect the dots.  Any help or advice would be greatly appreciated.

Is it William Grattan-Glaskerbeg, or  William Grattan of Glaskerbeg?

"Letters of Administration" means that William Grattan did not leave a Will, his widow Isabella applied to administer the estate but the snippet that hallmark posted will be all that remains (pre-1900 Wills & paperwork has been lost).
Away sorting out DNA matches... I may be gone for some time many years!

Almost all original Irish wills in the custody of the Public Record Office were destroyed in the fire of June 1922, at the outset of the Civil War. This was a terrible loss, as wills are wonderful genealogical resources, containing as they do many names not available elsewhere, as well as interesting details about people’s assets at death and family relationships.

However, copies of wills proved in District Registries from 1858 on survive in Will Registers, and are an exact replacement for the originals which were lost, except of course for the original signatures of the testator and witnesses.

Is this the one you were looking at?
http://census.nationalarchives.ie/reels/dw/IRE_DIOC_007246599_00075.pdf

I can never make head or tail of this stuff
http://census.nationalarchives.ie/search/dw/home.jsp

It is actually simple enough.

Someone would make a Will, when they died it was produced and acted upon.

The wording was the recorded in Ledgers.

e.g http://census.nationalarchives.ie/search/dw/details.jsp?id=52586

This Will may or may not exist anymore but this is what was in it.....

Thank you everyone for in information on Wills. I will be over in September and will have to visit PRONI in Belfast. There are several"Grattans" all from Glaskerbeg, Down and I'm trying to determine if my 2x Grandfather had brothers, which I believe he did, but sorting out who is who is hard since there were lots of Grattans from that area and I don't have verified information on the exact birth date
of William Grattan- about 1828 from Glaskerbeg, only marriage to Mary Hill.

Thank you again. As always so helpful and kind.
Cheers!!

Don't believe all you hear about Wills being burnt and all is doom and gloom, the paperwork and the results thereof may very well be lodged at Reg of Wills/Deeds as to 'who got what'!

The Will for one of mine was burnt but what was in the Will was registered showing house/business/farm was left to his 4 children and they registered the inheritance in their names.
