My Great Grandfather's Military Service
« on: Friday 28 April 17 15:53 BST (UK) »
I am trying to research the military service of my Great Grandfather. He had an interesting career move in that he was a horse trainer in The Curragh (Kildare) in 1890 and then joined the Army (6th Dragoons (I think) and was posted to Aldershot. His name was George Edwards. He disappeared and resurfaced in Scotland listed  in the 1901 census. Can anyone please provide any pointers?

Can you give his place and date of birth?

I am Zoe Northeast, granddaughter of Maximilian Double.

It is with great difficulty I share with you that in the early hours of 07 August 2021, Maximilian passed away unexpectedly but peacefully.

With deep sadness,
Zoe

Thank you for your replies Gortonboy and MaxD. I have no record of his place of birth but it could well be Durham. I know from his death record that he was born around 1867. It is possible that the record you post Gortonboy is correct but I'll need to try and research his service number of 3198 and look at the Fold3 (American database) document on Ancestry Thank you again.

1901 Census - bc.1866 England
Enlistment 13/8/1892 aged 23 - bc.1869 Failsgate, Durham, mother shown as Ann
Death - bc.1867

Gortonboy says parents should be a John and Ann BUT I cannot find a George Edwards birth in Durham 1865-1870 nor can I find him on 1871/1881 census with a birthplace in Durham.

Am I missing something here?

When/where did he die?
