my 1881 brickwall
« on: Friday 28 April 17 19:13 BST (UK) »
I am trying to find Catherine Toomey born 18th December 1879 in Liverpool (family folk law says she may have been born at sea) and her father Richard Toomey, a shoemaker born 1845 in Ireland and I've hit a brickwall.  The name can be spelt so many ways i.e Tuny, Tooney, Toonay, Tunney etc that I think I could be missing them somehow.

I can't find either of them on the 1881 census and Richard on the 1871 census although I've found him with his family on the 1851 and 61 census in Liverpool and he's in the Workhouse on the 1901 and 1911 in Manchester. He says he is a Widower but I can't find a marriage for him either so I don't know his wife's name.

I suspect that they are both in Manchester in 1891 but not together. Richard is lodging in Hanover Street and I found a Kate  Toomey  age 13 lodging with a family in George Leigh Street.

Can anyone find either of them on the 1881 census or unravel my confusion.

Margaret

I think you could have found the right family because Richard's father was called Robert and so is his son. Looney and Toomey sound similar as well especially if Richard had a strong Irish accent.

I'll check the death record but it does seem to fit in with what I know so far.

Many thanks.

Using new GRO website
Robert Tooney registered 1873 M Quarter Manchester Vol 08D page 165 mother maiden name Cavanagh

Catherine Tumy registered 1878 M Quarter Liverpool Vol 08B page 22 mothers maiden name Kavanagh

ADDED Could Robert have been a twin
same page, same mothers maiden name, Joanna

Robert and Joanna both have the same birth reference number so they would be twins.
