Frederick Toon(e) c.1830 - Syston - where did he go?
« on: Friday 28 April 17 22:37 BST (UK) »
Hi all,

I am on the look out for Frederick Toon(e), b.c. 1830 in Syston, Leicestershire.  Son of William and Ann.

I have him marrying Jane Charlesworth in 1851.  She died in 1856.  They had a daughter together - Ann Charlesworth Toon, born in Q March 1852, who later went on to marry Josiah Maddock.  Ann is with her Charlesworth Grandmother in 1861.

I am looking for Frederick Toon after 1856.  Did he remarry?  He is proving to be rather troublesome!

Many thanks,
Emma ;)

I don't know if this the right Frederick, but there is a marriage for Frederick TOON (25, (?) knitter) and Elizabeth Ann LYNE (24) on 1 December 1856 at St John the Divine, Leicester, both of 23 Stamford St. Frederick's father was William (?) knitter, however it does say "Batchelor".

The only census records I can see for Frederick b 1831 in Syston have Frederick as knitter:
1841 - with the family of Thomas HALL (framework knitter) at Brook St Sileby
Frederick TOON    10
HO/107/593/16

1851 - Bath St, Syston
Ann TOON    46  (widow)   mender of socks
Marshall (son)  22              needle maker
Frederick          21              framework knitter
Alfred              19              framesmith
David               17              framesmith
Selina              14                  worsted netter (fancy)
Emily Goode    nurseling   4  scholar

I notice also Frederick and Jane had a son Marshall bap 8 Sept 1856 in Syston, presumably the Marshall whose death was registered Sept qtr 1856, with Jane (aged 28)?

Still can't find Frederick in any later census though ...  ???

Thanks for the replies. He really is elusive.
I did wonder about the marriage in 1856. Seems most of the facts add up. Was there a stigma about being a widow?

Thank you!  That's absolutely fantastic to find.

I'm not sure when Frederick's father, William, died.  He isn't there on the 1841 census either - the head of the family is James Toon, aged 70.  Born in county of Leicestershire, so am not sure where the Irish connection comes in.

Edit: Also, why take Thomas William Toon with you, but leave Ann Charlesworth Toon back in England?  :-\

I thought the Ireland reference was odd too, but it looks like William & his siblings were all baptised together on 26 Oct 1810:

Richard born 25 Dec 1801, William 25 Dec 1803, Thomas 25 Sep 1805 & Elizabeth 15 Sep 1810.

There is a William Toon, Framework Knitter, aged 32 buried at Syston on 16 May 1836 that may well be him.

For info, the Leicester & Rutland Poor Law CD has these references for what looks like James & his family:

Ref QS6/1/7/590 Page 63  Michaelmas 1775. Appellant Barkby Thorpe, Respondent Syston
James Toone, Husband
Elizabeth Toone, Wife
Joseph 12, Son
James 8, Son
Mary 5, Daughter
Elizabeth 2, Daughter

Ref: QS3/245/2  MF59  Michaelmas 1775  Appellant Barkby Thorpe, Respondent Syston
Removal Order
Family listed as above

Ref: QS6/1/7/592 Page 67, Epiphany 1776.  Appellant Barkby Thorpe, Respondent Syston
Decision: Discharged
James Toone & Family

Also an apprentice record - Ref 1D57/35/26
1777 Syston. James Toon aged 10. Apprentice Master: John Williams
MORGAN: Glamorgan, Durham, Ohio. DAVIS/DAVIES/DAVID: Glamorgan, Ohio.  GIBSON: Leicestershire, Durham, North Yorkshire.  RAIN/RAINE: Cumberland.  TAYLOR: North Yorks. BOURDAS: North Yorks. JEFFREYS: Worcestershire & Northumberland. FORBES: Berwickshire, CHEESMOND: Durham/Northumberland. WINTER: Durham/Northumberland. SNOWBALL: Durham.

Thanks again for the info! It's really helpful.
It's not actually part of my own tree, but I feel like I'm really getting to know this bunch now! :)
