County Council of Domestic Economy - Northampton 1901
« on: Saturday 29 April 17 11:06 BST (UK) »
Whilst tracking a family twig, I discovered the 14 year old daughter in the 1901 Census (RG13/1429 153 28) residing as follows:

163 The Avenue Duston St James Northampton (Title as above) Pupil
The building appears to be in the charge of a Lady Superintendent and a Teacher of Cookery.

What was the nature of this place in 1901 (the equivalent of a "Scattered Home" or an Industrial School?) and how did children arrive there?

Is it now the Duston School?

Many thanks - Alan

"A History of Northamptonshire", published 1930 says:

a Domestic Economy School, under the Northants County Council, in Harleston Road, was established in 1896, and there is a housewifery centre, under the Northampton Education Committee.

And a log from The Cosgrove Council School says:
12 Jan 1915. Gertie Swain has been elected to a free scholarship at the Domestic Economy School, Dallington.

So, it looks to me like a Trade School?
