McLanachan/McLanighan/Macflanachan and Strang
« on: Saturday 29 April 17 13:50 BST (UK) »
Does anyone have Sarah McLanachan daughter of Matthew and Margaret in their ancestry?  My Sarah (3rd gr grandmother) married Peter Strang at Glasgow on 30 Sep 1842.  She died in Glasgow in 1904.  I have her marriage and her death and Peter's death certs through Scotlandspeople.  I also have census records which give her rough birth date as 1822 and that she was born in Irvine Ayrshire, but I cannot for the life of me find her birth, or a marriage of a Matthew McLanachan (or variations thereof) to a Margaret.  Any help gratefully appreciated.

On the Catholic Birth Register(SP)-
Sarah McLenochan , parents Mathew McLenochan / Margaret Carnochan , birth 13th Aug. 1821 , baptism 28th Aug. 1821 . St. Minn's Paisley Renfrew.

If Sarah's parents were Irish perhaps they married in Ireland.

Ooo - thank you for that.  On Sarah's death record it says her mother's married name, then underneath, previously................and under that m.s. McArthur, so wondering if she may have been married before.  Your post gives me a name as another possibility.  Do you think when she noted her place of birth as Ayrshire on all the census records, she may not have known her real birthplace or should I keep looking?

Hi Alanna,

Is it possible to post a snippet with the previous surname of who she was married to for us to decipher please?

Please leave enough either side/up & down for letter comparison if it's difficult to read.

Her mother was married previously to someone else.

I think this must be the family in 1841:

1841
29 Tobago Street, Barony
Mathew Mclenaghen, 60, Cotton handloom weaver, Ireland
Margaret Mclenaghen, 50, Ireland
Sarah Mclenaghen, 19, Scotland (outside census county)
Margaret Mcclenaghen, 16, Scotland (outside census county)

I can’t see the parents again in 1851, but there’s a marriage between a Margaret McClanachan and a William Murray in Barony on 2 Mar 1845, which could be the sister.

Ruth
McArthur, Milne, Mitchell, Black, Robertson, Morrison, Slessor, Lawrence - Aberdeenshire/Banffshire. Muir, Waddell, Fraser, Orr, Cowden - Lanarkshire/Renfrewshire/Dunbartonshire. Dalziel, Dalzell, Gourley, Cromie, Crombie, Bell - Co Down. Lewis, Corrigan, Morris, Cox, Hay - Monmouthshire/Pembrokeshire.  Baker, Ginger, Woodhurst, Swift, Jones - Kent/London.
