Manchester Newspapers & Football Clubs
« on: Saturday 29 April 17 20:31 BST (UK) »
Can anyone advise me regarding newspapers and Football Clubs from the Manchester area please?

I am researching my girlfriends late father Terence (Terry) Watkins (b. 21 Sep 1932, South Wales d. circa 2012). He was married in 1955 in Barton, Lancashire.

My mother-in-law has given me a brief case with old files which Terry had kept. In it were newspaper articles from when he was a footballer. There was even a 'match ticket' type file from Bolton Wanderers inviting him for a trial, dated 24th July. There is no year but we believe it was in 1951.

On Thursday, 17th May 1951 The Joural printed an article with a team photo which read that on the Saturday previous (12th May), Terry's team ROF Patricott beat Schofield Rovers 2-0 in the Ald Amos Trippier Shield Final. I don't know where the final took place, or even much about the competition but the goalscorers were Fewtrill & Anderson - maybe these names means something to anyone?

There is another newspaper, this time dated on the 9th may 1958 and in the Clifton & Worsley News, and again is a team photo from Cloride AFC and they had rather a successful season. It said that the Clifton side won the South-East Lancashire League, League Shield and Moore Cup. They were also semi-finalists in the Manchester Junior Cup.

Can anyone with any local football knowledge help me please?

Do you know if they have an online version to research?

Not online as far as I know. I thought that  you could view copies at Central Library in Manchester but after looking at this link I am not too sure.

I'll send them an email and see what response I get. Its an hour's drive for me so is possible but would have to plan for it.

Does anyone know anything about the clubs I mentioned?

ROF Patricroft was the old Royal Ordnance Factory which is long gone.

Cloride is now Cloride Batteries which I think is still going at Clifton. May be worth e-mailing them.

You could try putting a letter in the Local Salford Newspaper. Not sure what it's called these days. Used to be the Salford Reporter.

Or, try contacting the Manchester FA. They were/are the governing body for all the minor & junior leagues in Grt. Manchester.  Their e-mail is manchesterfa.com

Good luck, Eric.
