Was It " WDYTYA " ....?
« on: Saturday 29 April 17 22:42 BST (UK) »
It was absolutely Years ago, when I heard of this. I never had a TV, so was only going on what I heard, anecdotally. Never forgotten it though. Some programme based around ancestry. I seem to remember there was quite a flush of interest. 80's, 90's  ???

Anyway, seems there's some, almost panel game level show, or so it sounded to me. They've got some woman on there. Right blue rinse sort. Going on about how she can trace her WASP lineage back to 1066, and all that.

Then, they've done a DNA test on her. Announced that she's, in fact, almost 100% Romani Gypsy. Seems the woman went ballistic. Started screeching that she's sue them rotten, if they aired that on TV. Which, I suppose they must have done. Thus I got to hear about it.

Anyone heard about that? I know for a fact I was Told that. But, having never seen the programme ..... Anyone?

I remember the show you mean, but I think it was a Channel 4/Channel 5 one. They got some EDL/BNP types to go on camera talking about how they did not have a drop of foreign immigrant blood in their veins, then revealed their historical DNA, full of East European/Middle Eastern ancestry,  with hilarious consequences. No idea what it was called, I'm afraid  :(

That sounds like very much the thing! Given that it was ~ I'm taking it ~ some time ago, and I'm also repeating only what I remember being told ..... So happens, I found out, rather brutally, just the other night, how completely wrong our memories can prove!  :o

But, yeah. Sounds like it's Very Likely the one. Wonder what it was?

Thanks!

I think it was on in 2006 and called "So You Think You're English?"

There's a review in the "Daily Telegraph" online that fits with what we both remember

I think I watched this SteveG,the times about right, about three or four people featured, one was a solicitor, her DNA test suggested she was of Romany descent, she laughed it off and joked that she might have represented one or two.It later transpired that she twice tried to sue the programme makers for defamation or whatever.Seems the truth hurt in her case lol.

I was reading some of the comments below it, Nel of the Wild Ones. Seems quite a bit of consensus that the whole thing was a bit of a plot  8)

Come to think of it; If some random stranger popped up and told you ye DNA had tested 75% Transylvanian, would ye just say, " Oh. "

Reminds me of the time when Anthony Quinn was on a plane, back to US. The guy seated next to him said; " Ah. We're nearly there. Just passing over Mexico. Ye can tell by the stench. " Just before losing conciousness. Because, of course, everyone knows Quinn was Greek ;D

No. We know better than that. With us, it's Papers or GTFO.
