There was an E Wooton, age 23, a Private Soldier in 46 Regt  listed at the Infantry Barracks in Ayr in 1861. He would appear to be Edward Wooton, born in Ramsbury, Hungerford, Wilts around 1838 ( from his Service records on Findmypast.
I think Edward married Margaret Cashore in Paisley in 1862 and they had a number of children in the 1860s/1870s in Paisley. Margaret died in 1879 in Paisley and Edward is in the 1881 census transcribed as Edward Whitton, age 41, a labourer born in England. Some of the children are with him. Edward died in Paisley in 1888.
This is probably not related to your search but Edward was in Ayrshire around the time your David was born.

Isobel,

I wonder if this is the same person on the VR's

WOTTON EDWARD
Tenant Occupier
HOUSE NO 3 SCHOOL WYND
PAISLEY
1875

His death could open up a new door (if related) which would need to be checked out but at least there's a good chance of both parents being named on the DC with mother's m/s.
