Sheepard in York, Ontario
« on: Sunday 30 April 17 18:03 BST (UK) »
In Tremaine's 1860 map of York on the western part of Lot 7, Concession 4 east of Yonge Street is the name of Sheppard. Unfortunately the large letter "K" is covering his name or first initial. Would you have access to any other maps of the same area that might give me a clue to Sheppard's name. Unfortunately he is no longer listed as the owner in the 1878 map of York. Any assistance would be greatly appreciated as always.

Hi punch,

Have you contacted the land registry office in York or Toronto? The Archives Ontario may have that information as well. I would check with them.

I looked on the 1861 Agricultural census, and the neighbour Allison Leadley (from the map you mentioned) is still there, but the rest of Lot 7 is a James Medd/Mudd (it's hard to read).

Hopefully you can find a pre-1860 map.

On a side note, while looking at the 1861 Canada census. I bumped into a Sheppard family with a John McCormack residing with them.  I mention it as I recall you were recently looking for some McCormacks.

Is it possible for you to forward the 1861 census site to me so I can take a look at it? Thank you.

Hi again,
I was able to find a James Medd in the 1866 directory on Concession 4, Lot 7h. In the directory the letters f, h, and b following the lot numbers. What do the letters mean?

Hi Punch,

The Canadian censuses are at http://www.bac-lac.gc.ca/eng/census/Pages/census.aspx
The site runs slow, be warned!   You want to select Canada West under the province tab, it wasn't Ontario back then.

As for the abbreviations, I believe h is householder, f is freehold, and no idea of the b.  Somewhere in the directory there might be a list of abbreviations used?

Would you let me know what the difference is between a householder and a freeholder? Thank you so much for your help.

Hi punch,

I wasn't sure of the difference either, but this may help us both :-) Got int online:

"Hi checking in my 1896 dict. this is the definition I found
a freeholdder: the possessor of a freehold.
a freehold: an estate in real property of inheritance or for life or the
tenure by which such estate is held.
A householder: The master or head of a family. One who occupies a house with
his family.
Town in which almost every householder is an English protestant."

Thanks JDC, I wasn't overly sure either.

I just found this list online : http://www.genealogyintime.com/dictionaries/city-directory-abbreviations.html

So the mysterious b is for board.  I guess that means he "owns" the land for his life, has a family in the house on the property, and also has boarders?
