Wye Parish Registers
« on: Sunday 30 April 17 20:33 BST (UK) »
Is anyone able to check for some christenings and burials in Wye? I am trying to find some information on people with the name Dense/Dence/Dennse between about 1500 and 1590. In particular I am keen to find any references to the following people:

Margaret Dense - born sometime between 1500 and 1540 I suspect
John Dense - born sometime between 1500 and 1540
Phillis Dense [daughter of John] - probably born between 1540 and 1624
Philip Dense - born and died before 1624.

If anyone can help or needs more details please let me know.

Thanks

Matt

Hi Matt,

I've checked the baptisms and burials for St Gregory and St Martin, Wye.  Don't know if the following are of any use to you.....

a burial in 1611 for Philip Dense, a householder.
a baptism in 1580 for Margaret Dence, daughter of Rychard.
a baptism in 1546 for John Dens, son of Phylypp.

The records I have don't contain the exact dates, only the year and I also have marriage records if you need any more info.
Best wishes HL

Hi there

Thanks for those. They definitely give me a starting point. Are there any instances of any christening or burials for this name between 1590 and 1640? In particular I am keen to know if there is any sign of a Michael Dens or Dense born before 1624.

I'll add more details later when I have my notes with me.

Thanks for the help so far.

Matt

Ok here's what I have on the Dense family in Wye.

The people I'm interested in are all mentioned in the Will of my ancestor Margaret Denn of Ickham (dated 1613, Probate 1624). In her will she mentions the following people :

"my brother John Dense of Wye and his daughter Phillis Dense my goddaughter"

"John Dense, Michael Dense and Mary Dense" who are described as "my aforesaid John Dense's children"

"Martha Dense the daughter of my cousin Philip Dense deceased"

The Philip Dense who was buried in 1611 is probably this one (ie Margaret's cousin). Is there any sign of any children for him in the christenings? Is there a record of his age?

If anyone has any more info it would be appreciated. In particular it would be useful if we could find more info on John or Philip Dense and christenings of Martha, Mary, Michael, or Phillis.

What period do the marriage records cover? I guess we need to check for marriages between 1540 and 1620 for these people.

Thanks again
Matt

Yep I've seen the details on that site and found several references to the surname in the 1500s but so far no one who matches with the people I'm looking for. Of course the name might have been spelt different ways too.

Here are some more details on Margaret Denne [nee Dense] whose will I have quoted from.

She was married to Michael Denne [or Michael A'Denne] in about 1556 in Ickham, Kent. This was Michael's second marriage.

Michael was born in Barham, Kent in about 1528 and died in Ickham in August 1594. His will was proved on 29 August 1594.

Margaret died in 1624 and left I will [which I have seen]. According to all the pieces of info I've seen she was was born about 1535.

I have already found several references to the Dense name in Wye in the 1550s to 1600s so hopefully if I keep digging I should find some more references.
