robert cogan-1812- glazier- leicester square
« on: Monday 01 May 17 00:01 BST (UK) »
hi all,
im looking for help tracing any more information about Robert Cogans business, which was based at 48 Leicester square/ 4 princes street, Westminster.
(I'm also looking for Roberts parents)

I have all censuses already. 1841 st anne soho
                                         1851 st anne strand
                                         1861 st anne, strand
                                         1871 graham terrace, hackney.

Robert was born c1812 and died before 1881
he married cecil mary clark 1834  @ st martin in the field

around 1840 Robert seems to be an assignee of the bankrupt estate of Matthew Edward, (plumber)

in 1847, Robert himself became bankrupt, (glass, lead and colour merchant)

in 1852, Robert was mentioned in the 'Leeds Advertiser' at an agricultural show, he was showing a 'glass dairy' (milk pails, butter slabs etc)

in 1857, Robert is named on the 'old bailey online' website as being defrauded.

in 1862 Robert was made bankrupt again.

in 1865, Robert is an assignee for the estate of A. W Clark (a dealer in in glass)

I do realise that I have a lot of information about a person born this early. And a google search brings up loads of hits on his name.

what I'm really looking for is information on how to find out more about his business, was it successful, why was he made bankrupt, who did he owe and why etc.

I haven't had much experience with London records, there are so many!
any help or pointers of where to look for more detail gratefully received .

thank you for reading

Looks like Thomas Cogan married Jane Poole 27 April 1805 St Botolph's Aldgate.
Other children found
John (Dare) Cogan born 27 January 1806 bap 18 May 1806 St Leonard Shoreditch
Thomas (Dare) Cogan born 14 August 1807 bap 20 September 1807 St Botolphs Aldgate
Jane Cogan born 23 October 1808 baptized 4 December 1808 St Botolphs Aldgate

Another transcription has (Dare) as David.

The Thomas 1807 must have died as another born 1810 baptized 1812 as in previous post.

Just in case
ref Essex Record Office Parish Registers
Cecil Mary Clark was born 28 March 1811 bap All Saints West Ham 26 May 1811 daughter of James and Mary Clark.
They were witnesses at her marriage to Robert Cogan.
Stratford did not have its own parish church until about 1835 prior to that it was part of West Ham.

Robert Cogan died 1880 registered Croydon Surrey

Cecil Mary is living there 1881 on Freemasons Road

Cecil Mary Cogan died 1882  registered Edmonton district.

As far as the bankruptcies go try the National Archives at Kew.

There's a report of his 1849 bankruptcy hearing in the Morning Post of 27 October 1849 (Page 7, final column).  Looks like he was caught out by falling market prices in an oversupplied sector following deregulation.

NB per directories his Princes Street premises were at number 5.

Per the 1843 Directory, 5 Princes Street was his glass, lead and colour warehouse while 48 Leicester Square was his glass shade and gas lamp warehouse.

Have you seen the tribute to "Cogan & Co of 48 Leicester Square" in the Sherborne Mercury, 24 Aug 1852 which mentions their contribution to the Great Exhibition?

I googled "cogan glass great exhibition" which produced google book (searchable) "Official Catalogue of the Great Exhibition of the Works of Industry of all Nations 1851" - Cogan's glass page 126.
