stuck on Patrick CAMPBELL and Christian WEDDERSTON 1700's
« on: Monday 01 May 17 06:28 BST (UK) »
Hello

I'm hoping someone can help me trace my ancestor Patrick CAMPBELL.
I'm hoping to find information on Patrick and his parents. It would also be great to find information on his wife Christian WEDDERSTON.

I know that they had at least 2 children;
*Anderson Campbell 27 July 1748 -Prestonkirk, Haddingtonshire, Scotland
          - Anderson Married Catherine Purney on 7 Oct 1777 in Surrey England and they had 6 children;
              -  John Thomas, James, Elizabeth, Anderson, Samuel

*Janet Campbell 22 Jan 1756 -Whitekirk, Lothian, Scotland

Thank you in advance
my fingers are crossed that someone can find something for me  :)

Hi there  :)

One more child showing for Patrick and wife Christian, a son Robert https://familysearch.org/ark:/61903/1:1:XTYZ-Q3P

Sponsors' names for children's baptisms can help with extended family names. Have you viewed the image of the christenings from the Old Parish Registers? This is a transcript from Anderson's www.freereg.org.uk/search_queries/new?search_id=590889d3f4040b14d8950c06

Robert's here www.freereg.org.uk/search_records/581812b7e93790ec8badce7b?search_id=59088b57f4040b14e46e2b3f&ucf=false

Janet's details from 1852 here www.freereg.org.uk/search_records/581813bce93790ec8baf8f31?search_id=59089a85f4040b14e46e35a4&ucf=false

 ;D Thanks, Bev. Well that is not much use is it! Wonder why that is, freecen does the same.

teaganc, the entries for Anderson and Robert were in Scotland/East Lothian/Prestonkirk. The entry for daughter Janet was in Whitekirk. Make sure to click on the 'name soundex' box.

Hi all
thank you for your help! I hadn't come across that webpage before in my searches...
I think i may have found the baptism record for Patrick in Dunbar East Lothian 1716 - fathers name John

https://www.freereg.org.uk/search_records/58180ff3e93790ec8ba91215?search_id=5909787df4040b14d898998b&ucf=false

However Ancestry.com is giving me hints for Patrick Campbell born 1720
Kilmodan, Argyll, , Scotland - Parents William and Barbara.

I'm not sure how to prove or disprove which one (if either) are right?

I don't think at this stage you can make any guesses really on what Patrick Campell's origins were (personally, I do not think ancestry's hints are of any use for this type of search  ::)). With wife Christian, you have the possibility of a relative called Robert (father, brother?) who shows on the children's baptisms as sponsor.

I'm currently transcribing very old Haddingtonshire records for FreeReg and the spelling of even the simplest surname belies description  (Wood - Wod, Reid - Red, Charles - Charells, Knox - Nocks, etc.).
You really need to think imaginatively!
I am wondering if Wedderston is a bastardised form of Wetherspoon/Witherspoon, which is a common surname in those parts.  There are a lot of Wedderson, Wadderson, Wetherspoons, Witherspoons, but I can't see a Christian among them.
Have you had any luck in finding the marriage of the couple?

Hi Bev

I have found Christian listed with a few variations to her last name already. And also found Patrick noted as 'Peter' in one document.
I haven't yet found any information on their marriage.

Peter/Patrick are interchangeable as are Christian/Christina/Kirsty (possibly more).

1 (of possibly a few) for the surname missing is Wotherspoon.
