Joseph COX, Inspector of Taxes. Death prior to 1844.
« on: Tuesday 02 May 17 06:20 BST (UK) »
Hi team

I'm looking for anything on the above fella.

His profession and death info is only known from his son's marriage cert in 1844 which states father deceased.  The son was married in Leicester.

With thanks,

bitzar.

Do you have Joseph in 1841.  You say he married in Leicester is that also where he was born.

Who are the witnesses to the marriage

I don't have Joseph on the 1841 yet either way.  It was the son who was married in 1844.  The son signed his own name.

The witnesses were the wife's sister and a George SPARROW, his mark.  I dont know who George Sparrow is?!

You haven't told us how old Joseph's son was when he married in 1844, nor his name.

Two possible burials for Joseph:

Foston - buried in 1832 at the age of 77
Bagworth - buried 1842 at the age of 40

Transcriptions and NBI are merely finding aids.  They are NOT a substitute for original record entries.

I thought I'd hold off on the son's name just to see if anyone could 'come up' with anything on Joseph first.  I'm happy to name the son, not a prob.

For some reason I have not even had a look at George SPARROW before... On the 1841 there is 1 George SPARROW in Leicestershire.  He is in the 'House of Corrections'. NOWWWWWWWWW, on the 1841 I'm also not sure which groom I need to focus on because there are a few young Mr Cox's, BUT there is a young Mr Cox in the same 'House of Corrections'!  Too much of a co-incidence I think now.

You can rule out Welford Road Cemetery - 1849 onwards and also Gilroes - 1902 onwards.

I suspect the son was born about 1797ish.  The Joseph born in Foston could be the one, making him about 40 when the son was born, and deceased when he married for at least the 2nd time in 1844.

The son's MC on reads 'of full age'!  I don't know who his previous wife was or his children.  He possibly died in 1846 aged 49.  His wife possibly died earlier the same year but their names are quite 'popular'.

Many thanks,

bitzar.

I saw from your previous thread that the son's name was John.

There are these Leicester baptisms:

1796 (May 24, born May 20) John & Joseph, twins sons of Joseph & Alice Cox

Presumably that John died because we then have:

1798 (June 11, born June 3) John Lewin, son of Joseph & Alice Cox

John Lewin Cox married Elizabeth Harrison in Leicester on 16 June 1816

Hello again ShaunJ

I had seen the birth of the twins but not other siblings.  The dates are good but I haven't seen my John referred to John Lewin COX.  With this is mind I have only very BASIC info on John COX.

I know that he married Mary NEWEY in 1844, both widow/widower.
Mary prob died in early 1846.
John prob died in November 1846.
John was most likely in Leicester County House of Corrections on the 1841 with a George SPARROW who was a witness at his 1844 wedding.  Mary's son had also been 'in an out' so maybe this is a link.

Can you place John Lewin COX after his 1816 marriage?!

Many thanks,

bitzar.
