Leicester Records Office at Wigston might have something  :-\
Transcriptions and NBI are merely finding aids.  They are NOT a substitute for original record entries.
Remember - "They'll be found when they want to be found" !!!

Records don't start until the 1860's.  Thanks for the tip though.  They suggested to check newpapers!

 Leicestershire Mercury Sat.34 Aug.1839

John Cox +Geo.Sparrow of Leic. were charged on the information of Chaplin, gamekeeper to the
Earl of Stamford, with fishing in a brooke between Glen field + Anstey on the 13th. inst.

Defendants denied the charge, and said, they could bring witnesses another week to prove they were
not in the place named.

Magistrates were about to adjourn the case, but as the defendants behaved in rather an insolent
manner and refused to tell the names of their witnesses, they were unceremoniously adjudged
to pay a fine of 40sh. each, costs or 2 mths.imprisonment to hard labour.

April 29 1841: George Sparrow, and John Cox, both of Leicester, were fined £5 each, or 2 months imprisonment, for unlawfully fishing in the preserves of the Rt Hon the Earl of Stamford at Newton Linford.

WOW, thanks people.  Seems my theory is correct!  Any mention on the marital status of John COX?!  In 1844 he says he is a widower.

Oh, and it seems they like fishing in that brook!

So many thanks,

bitzar.

Would there be anything in a Leicester Newspaper for the death of an Elizabeth COX in 1843.  She may be the wife of said John.  I'm wondering if they can be linked.

Many thanks,

bitzar.
