Russell / Burton / Wilkinson, SELBY - Inland Rev. Register
« on: Tuesday 02 May 17 09:32 BST (UK) »
Hello

William Russell of Skipwith (deceased) was worth about £100 and has been entered in the 1809 Inland Revenue Register entry (attached, slide it over to see full entry).

I have also drawn a tree of Sarah Russell's descent as described in the Selby Parish Register at her Birth/Baptism in 1793, with a few other notes.

The Wilkinson's were linked to the Russells.

Thank you.

Mark

Sarah Arundel who became wife of James Hood of Selby claimed her father was John Arundel, Stone Agent when she married James Hood in 1851.

However, in the 1861 Ousegate, Selby Census, James Hood claimed he was Son-in-law to Mary Wilkinson, Head of the household.

But is James Hood's link to Wilkinson via his mother Sarah Hood (nee Russell)?

Can't answer your question but the Burton family of Selby is quite interesting - a George Burton left a PCC Will in 1844. His daughter Hannah married a Joseph RICHARDSON of Selby.

Possibly some relation to the Standerings too - a grandson bears this surname as a middle name.

Also worth noting from daughter Hannah's baptism in 1798,  her mothers (Frances Taylor)  mother was the daughter of "Abraham Law of Selby aforesaid Couper" - he died 1793. When did Richard Gibson take over premises at Wren Lane ?

Not quite sure, are you saying you think the Will of William Russell of Skipwith is Sarah Hood's (Russell) father???  I think this William Russell (born illegitimately to Ann Russell (spinster).  He married Elizabeth Chatty in Skipwith.  His daughter Mary (born 1780) married Thomas Burton (a butcher) and lived in Skipwith.  He had another daughter Elizabeth (but can't find her marriage - at this stage -  assumed she married a Wilkinson).

Please do correct me if you are sure he is "your" William Russell

The George Burton from my post names his son "Thomas Burton butcher of Selby" sole executor of his Will.

Are these the same family ?

Mary is living with her son Charles in 1841.  There is a burial for Thomas Burton in 1836 in Skipwith

I did some "stuff" on George Burton of Selby last year, and I think (only think) Mark said it was a different family from "his" Burton.

Thanks for replies.

When I saw the Inland Revenue Register, I wondered, if the two families were linked to each other, by another marriage.

My Sarah Russell's father William Russell married a Mary Burton.

The daughter of William Russell of Skipwith, Mary Russell must have married a Burton, to become Mary Burton.

When I saw Wilkinsons in the Inland Revenue Register as Grandchildren and the Mary Burton daughter reference, I wondered if William Russell of Skipwith and his Son William Russell of Leeds, were linked to my Russell lot, by another marriage between the two families.

Perhaps the similar surnames, are just co-incidental.

Regards Mark

Mrs H and I need to get up to Preston and see if the Lord Petre, Selby documents confirm who George Hood really was, when he took over Gibson's premises.

I have asked Leeds Special Collections, re the reading out of Sarah Hoods 'Not in Membership' Nov 1879 burial at the York Meeting in 1880 and if the records also give any indication as to why George Hood's burial was conducted by them, as a 'Not in Membership'.

Hannah Nuby's (Mother of Chester Newby) Probate Bundle and another Probate of Richard Hood of Habton (d.1802) holding property and lands at Slingsby in 1760 in Trust for Thomas & Mary Jackson, a Richard Clark mentioned and later a Mr Robert Cook is the Solicitor involved.

 --------------

Sarah Russell a basket maker gives me the impression, that her family are fairly industrious too.

A few questions

If your Mary Russel ( nee Burton) married Thomas Goldsbrough in 1805 - why was she 'of the parish of Sculcoates' ?

In November 1802 when William Russell's son William Jnr was buried Parish records give "son of Wm Russell of Hull Sailor".  So could be the family moved to Hull for William's job as a Sailor?

Thank you.

Yes, just noticed, we discussed Thomas Gouldsbrough on pages 2, 3, 4 & 5 of this thread ...
http://www.rootschat.com/forum/index.php?topic=744970.9

Because some of George Hood's Sons purchased Byefield (Copyhold property in the Manor of Selby).
Thomas Gouldsbrough had died (Will 1840) leaving Mary Gouldsbrough saddled with a mortgage, which the Hoods cleared up and they appeared at the Manor of Selby Court to seek to be Admitted to the Manor (a formal process) to take ownership of Byefield.

We were hoping the Manor of Selby records would give an insight into the Hood side, but instead, Mary Gouldsbrough had once been Mary Russell.

So the Manor of Selby document (Hull Archives), only further confirmed the Hood (Sons of George Hood) link to the Russell side of the 1815 Hood=Russell marriage.

Morning All

Had a quick look at Thomas Gouldsbrough.  He married Elizabeth Buttle 1 January 1784 in Snaith. Elizabeth dies 1803.  He remarries 11 Feb 1805 in Sculcoates

Thomas Gouldsbrough widower of the Parish of Selby in the diocese of York and Mary RUSSELL widow and of this Parish. Married by License

Thomas buried Selby 8 Apr 1840.  Mary buried Selby 1 Oct 1848

EDIT

From Dade records

Thomas was son of John Goldsbrough of Knottlingley sailcloth maker by Jane his wife.  Elizabeth dau of George Buttle of Snaith Plumber & Glazier by Ann his wife dau of Tarbotton of Selby Innkeeper

Will of Thomas Gouldsbrough details at Borthwick

Court detail   Prerogative Court of York
Document type   Will
Document reference   vol.202, f.254

Thank you, Claire and Goughy.

How interesting the reference to Thomas Gouldsbrough marrying Mary Russell at Sculcoates about 1805? Charles Turner and Morland / Maudlin / Magdaline Turner (nee Maudland Hood) had two children baptised Sculcoates a little earlier 1797 - 1799.
