Who was Martha and where did she go?
« on: Tuesday 02 May 17 21:11 BST (UK) »
We have been following the life of George Henry Brace. He was born 1859 in Herefordshire, died 1931 in Stockton on Tees, County Durham. He married Jane Ann Jones in 1894 in Gateshead. We have all the records for him and his family despite the habit he had of not telling the truth.

Then my relative found Martha.

Martha Wright married George Henry Brace in St Mary's Norton on June 6th 1881. No sign of her before we found this, in George's life and he married Jane, and was on the 1891 census as a bachelor /unmarried. Definitely our George unfortunately.

So who is Martha? I think she is a servant in Middlesbrough in 1881 just before the marriage. That says born Middlesbrough in 1862, and there is a GRO reference that fits with mmn Jones. No sign of her in 1871 and no idea at all what happened to her after the marriage.

So could you help find her on 1871 census please. Father (from marriage certificate) is William Wright a roll turner (?).
And more importantly what happened to her after June 1881? Did they have any children before she disappeared?
Any help would be much appreciated.

George Henry Brace. He was born 1831 in Herefordshire, died 1931 in Stockton on Tees, County Durham.

Deaths September qtr 1931
George H Brace aged    72    Stockton    10a   80

That gives a birthyear of approx 1859

This is the only birth on freebmd but failure to register a birth only became a fineable offence in 1874 so it may not be the right one

Births June qtr 1859
George Henry Brace     Abergavenny    11a   99

Have you looked for a death?

I have looked for a death but they seem to be many years after or the age is wrong.

So where does Herefordshire come from?  Are you sure you have the right person?

GRO isn;t a great help for possible siblings of Martha, as there look to be two Wright/Jones partnerships producing children in Stockton, judging by the identical quarters but non matching references (i.e. not twins)

If she has her father's name right, there is a marriage including a William Wright and an Ann Jones registered in Stockton in 1858, but can;t see them in the area in 1861

He married Jane Ann Jones in 1894 in Gateshead

Is he shown as a widower on the marriage cert?

and was on the 1891 census as a bachelor /unmarried.

The 1891 entry for him does not show a marital status
