Carol - re his birth place. George was actually born in Abergavenny in Herefordshire. It took my relative and I an absolute age to find him going backwards from his Stockton death, as we could get to 1891 and then he was no where in the North East. Luckily the gentleman I was doing the searching with knew George's second wife Jane well, she was at his wedding and told him about all her sons but not much about her husband. It is from his sons that we traced George. The grandsons were shocked too about the Welsh origins but we have all the certificates as proof.

Mabel, this is what is so frustrating. If the William Wright / Ann Jones marriage is correct then surely they have to be some where near given that Martha is born in the Middlesbrough registration district? I may have to find the funds for the birth certificate to see if it helps identify her family. Then if I am really lucky she may have gone back to them if the marriage failed?? Probably wishful thinking !

Abergavenny is in Monmouthshire Wales - not Herefordshire

The 1859 birth shown in my earlier reply - mothers maiden name was Gardener

All that was written on the certificate for address was "Norton"

The witnesses were John Carson - the writing is bad and Mary Wright.

Thank you for asking that question. I wonder how Mary is related?

Carol you are following the right family. He names John Brace as father on both certificates and occupation as labourer.

John Carson is a neighbour of the Martha Wright in Talbot Street in 1881.

Talbot Street is in the Tilery area of Stockton, just off Norton Road - if you watched the last series of Benefits Street it was filmed in Kingston Road, which is about two streets away from Talbot Street.
