John & Posthuma EVANS
« on: Wednesday 03 May 17 10:07 BST (UK) »
I live in New Zealand & I am researching my husband's maternal ancestor, John EVANS b. abt 1800 Troedyraur, Cardiganshire. It appears that John m. abt 1820, Posthuma (possibly HUGHES)b. abt 1800, Abernant, Carmarthenshire. I haven't been able to find a marriage record for them. Several of their 7 children were baptised in Abernant in a nonconformist congregational church: Bwlch-Newydd Chapel.
I would also like to find John EVANS' parents but realise that this could be difficult with such a common Welsh name.
Can anyone suggest any resources that would be helpful with this research? I have already searched using Ancestry, FindMyPast & Family Search.

If I have the right Margaret Evans (age 10 1851 Census) born c 1841 Neath, Glamorgan, then this may be her Birth Reg from the newish GRO Index which has Mothers maiden names.

EVANS, MARGARET, Mothers mn    JONES******
GRO Reference: 1840  M Quarter in NEATH  Volume 26  Page 438
There is also in Neath;
Margaret Evans;
1840, Mother MICHAEL
1841, Mother JONES
1841, Mother REES
1840 Festiniog, Mother GRIFFITHS

Cross referencing with DANIEL Evans c 1838 Carmarthenshire;
EVANS, DANIEL, Mother mn GRIFFITHS****
GRO Reference: 1838  S Quarter in CARNARVON UNION  Volume 27  Page 281

So here we go;

Familysearch.Org;

Marriage;
John EVANS to Posthuma GRIFFITH,3 April 1820, Cynwyl Elfed, Carmarthenshire, Wales

Trish :)

I followed the Neice Anne Hughes from 1851 Census. (born c 1849 Llantwit, Glamorgan, Wales) Living with John/Portumah Evans.

I think this is her in 1861;
Thomas Jones, 47
Mary Jones, 40, born Llancwydd, Carmarthenshire
Margaret Jones, 4/12
ANN Hughes, 12, Daug, born Llantwit, Glamorgan, Wales****
Elizabeth Hughes, 5
John Lloyd, 24

FreeBMD has a 1859 Marriage with Thomas JONES/Mary HUGHES on same page

If I have the right 1849 GRO Birth Index for Margaret Jones her Mothers mn was EVANS

Give me some more time to sort this out.
It appears to me that Mary was nee EVANS, married a Hughes, was Widowed and married Thomas JONES.

So this would make Mary possibly a Sister of John Evans.

Many thanks for your prompt reply, Trish. I'm finding Welsh research very confusing! Importantly you gave me new info re using the actual GRO website index for finding a Mother's maiden name. I had never used their index because I assumed it would be the same as FreeBMD with no maiden surname.
But this EVANS/JONES/GRIFFITHS research is proving tricky.
I also considered the possibilities that the 2 chn: Ann & Elizabeth HUGHES in the JONES household in 1861 Wales Census, could be...
1. Daughters of a previous marriage of Mary EVANS to a HUGHES? The marr. would presumably be approx. early 1840s? I found in 1851 Wales Census a Peter HUGHES wife Mary & 2 chn Ann & Elizabeth of roughly correct ages BUT the only marr. I could find that seems to be them, the wife's maiden name is WILLIAMS.
2. Nieces of Thomas JONES rather than daughters?
3. To complicate matters further... 1851 Wales Census of John & Posthumah EVANS has Ann HUGHES in their household as a niece.... therefore dau. of one of their siblings, not from their dau. Mary's generation?
But I do think it is looking like Posthuma's maiden name was GRIFFITH. I have that marr. record for John EVANS & Posthuma GRIFFITHS from Family Search 1820 @ Cynwyl Elfed, Carmarthenshire. Therefore their youngest child, Margaret EVANS is looking like being the GRO Index : b. March Qtr 1842, Neath Reg Dist, Vol 26, Page 427 Mother's maiden name GRIFFITH.
This is probably my last major research of our 19 family branches but as usual I'm getting addicted by the process! I'd really appreciate it if you find any further info.
Regards, Jane Townsend
