Hello

Newcastle Courant, 29 November 1828
On the 18th inst. in this town, aged 38, Elizabeth Selby Hood, second daughter of Mr Hood, late of Kilfinnan, Scotland.

The November 1828 Burial Register for St John Newcastle upon Tyne, confirms the burial of the above Elizabeth Selby Hood, aged 38, of Howell Street, Newcastle upon Tyne, giving her a birth of about 1790.

I'm not so good on this new look Scotlands People search, but have an account, but can't find a birth for Elizabeth Selby Hood? Any help please, as I can download it?

 -----------------

Done a bit of secondary research in the newspapers for any Hood surname in the Kilfinnan area and there was a John Hood, Factor, to be contacted at Invergarry in 1832 in respect of the Lease of Shooting Rights at nearby Glengarry (if I have the right Kilfinnan, as I also see a Kilfinan, near Kilfinan Bay, West Scotland, spelt with one 'n').

I see that Kilfinnan and Invergarry are on the Caledonian Canal, South-west of Fort Augustus, so perhaps involved in trading and the link to Newcastle?

A book published in 1836, has a John Hood, Esq., Invergarry House, listed as a subscriber to the book.

 -----------------

Can anyone shed any light please on the parentage of Elizabeth Selby Hood, to check if Selby is a family name in her case, please?

Thank you.

Mark

There is mention here of a John Hood, factor for Glengarry, having an illegitimate child in 1827:

Kate McGRUER Born c1803 Glengarry. Had son to John HOOD, Factor for Glengarry 1827 (illegitimate). 1881 census lived Faichem, Kilmonivaig Parish. Pauper.

Not sure these dates would fit for father to Elizabeth...

Thanks for replies.

Wondered if she had been an Elizabeth Hood that has married or living with a Selby?

I have reservations too like Monica.

I wonder if Mr Hood mentioned on Elizabeth Selby's death was a different person to the Factor?

Could John (Factor) have been a brother to Elizabeth?
