That answer would be NO Jomot...

I think I will wait for the original copy of the 1844 marriage for a hand writing comparision and check that, and then will order Joseph's 1840 death after that.

Death notices for both Alice and Joseph appeared in the newspapers

On Alice's it's noticed they were of 'Bow Lane' Preston

On Joseph's he was living at 'Oxford Street' Preston.

Maybe a trade directory of the time may have the answer.

From Mr Google
Wikipedia

Rutland is a landlocked county in the East Midlands of England, bounded to the west and north by Leicestershire, to the northeast by Lincolnshire and the southeast by Northamptonshire.

Nothing in the 1834 Pigots Directory for him.

On the actual marriage licence it does say 'Joseph Cox Gentleman' - perhaps he was a man of leisure bitzar ?

When he signed the register he signed Joseph Cox Jun(ior) -
- so at least we can assume his father may have been a Joseph too.

Is there anyone can check that - see if it is Jun ?

His 1840 death has Joseph as aged 69 and on marriage he was said to be 21, so both put his birth at 1771.   This could therefore be a fit:

11 Nov 1771, Loughborough, Joseph s/o Joseph & Ann Cox

Also at Loughborough, 30 Jul 1773 Ann d/o Joseph & Ann Cox

Marriage at Loughborough 12 Oct 1770, Joseph Cox aged 30 widower & labourer of Loughborough & Ann Simons aged 25 of Loughborough, widow

Burial: 29 Oct 1769 Loughborough, Elisabeth wife of Joseph Cox

Unfortunately there are a few marriages between a Joseph Cox & Elizabeth - none in Leicestershire - so I'm struggling to go further back at the moment.

However, in 1793 letters of administration were granted in respect of Joseph Cox, labourer of Houghton on the Hill, to Joseph Cox of Syston, Schoolmaster "his natural and lawful son".

The document is signed by the son, and the signature is without a doubt the same as the Joseph Cox Jr who married Alice Lewin, declaring himself to be a Gentleman.
