Why would a son change his surname

In the 1881 census James Archer age 10 is living with his parents Walter and Ellen and siblings RG11 1748 9 11 by the 1901 census he is again with Walter and Ellen but now his name is James T Pearcey would anyone know why James would change his surname.

Hi ,  was his mother's maiden name Pearcey ?  Maybe Walter wasn't his real father and Mr Pearcey was.
There could be a few reasons really.

His parent married in 1875, after he was born, so using his birth name.

His birth was registered as Pearcey, mother's maiden name Cornwall, so she appears to have been married previously.

What about Alice Archer born 1868 did she belong to Ellen as well? 

Walter is too young to be her father.  I amend that very young if he was her father.

On marriage entry she is Ellen Pearcey spinster, father Thomas Pearcey... ???

What about Alice Archer born 1868 did she belong to Ellen as well?

Yes Josey just about to post that when she marries Walter her father is Pearcey not Cornwell.

Alice was also registered as Pearcey, same mother.

I haven't found a Cornwall Pearc/ey marriage yet.
