William and Rachel Aubrey/Awbrey in 1861-1881 census
« on: Thursday 04 May 17 12:07 BST (UK) »
I am hoping someone out there with better skills than me can help.

I and trying to find Richard Awbrey/Aubrey in the 1861, 1871, and 1871 wales census, plus his wife Rachel in the 1861 and 1871 census. William was born 1796 in Llanddarog and died Sept Qtr 1881 "Llanelly". His wife Rachel was born 1801 in Llangennech and died June Qtr 1971 "Llanelly.

Last time I can find then is in 1851, Hamlet of Cilcarw, Llangendeirne at Glandwrucha with children Richard 21 (born Llannon), Margaret 12 (born Llanddarog), Elizabeth 10 (born Llanddarog), Joseph 7 (born Llannon). HO107/2472, page 24

They must be there somewhere, given that their deaths are recorded in Llanelly, but I am assuming mis-transcribed, but have tried variations surname variations with no luck

Regards

Hello

Thanks a good start, thank you very much. William in 1881 looks a good candidate as do the other finds for Richard and Joseph as sons. Aubrey/Awbrey is not a common name, which is why I am finding it strange that William and Rachel are not obviously showing up in the censuses from 1861 onwards. Any other possible matches in the Pontyberem/Llannon area would be strong candidates. Good luck with your further searches. I will keep looking as well.

Hello

I have still been unable to find William and Rachel Aubrey in censuses later than 1851 and they "dissapear" until their deaths are recorded in Llanelly in 1881 and 1871 respectively.

A factor for their "disappearance"  may be that I have just found out that their sons David and Daniel both died in the Gwendraeth Colliery (owned by Daniel Watney), Pontyberem accident on 10 May 1852. Someone has also sent me details of the discovery of their bodies around 8 years later "near each other with their hands grasped".

As well as the Joseph and Richard Aubrey that Ciderdrinker kindly found I think I have found Elizabeth Aubrey and her husband Samuel Davies in later censuses. There may well be other of their children out there. A possibility is that one of these may have William or Rachel present as a Father/Father in Law or Mother/Mother in Law

the William Aubrey in Carmarthen is a different man, he's on the 1841 as a painter with his wife Mary - marriage William Aubrey & Mary Meredith 25 Feb 1830 at St Peter's Carmarthen.

Possible marriage for your William 10 Jan 1817 to Rachel William at Llangendeirne, William being a widower.Possible previous marriage 12 June 1816 William Aubre of Llanarthney & Mary William at Llanddarog.

Not that this is helping me to find William & Rachel.

Thanks for clarifying the William Aubrey Carmarthen.

Aubrey seems commonly spelt as Awbrey and there is a marriage of William Awbrey to Rachel Morgan in Llannon on 27 June 1817. I am leaning towards this one as children I know of in census were born either Llannon or a Llanddarog. Any thoughts?

that's a better bet, mother's maiden name shows as Morgans on registrations for Elizabeth born 1841 and Margaret born 1838. I'd forgotten to check the Awbrey spelling. It just goes to show there's more than one William Aubrey in the same area.

Hello

Did you find any information re the Aubreys?  They are my direct ancestors & I too have not been able to find them on the 1861 & 1871 censuses - they are a mystery

Rachel Aubrey is buried in Caersalem Pontyberem - she died in May 1871

Hello

No luck but I have found their possible death entries

AWBREY, WILLIAM       age 86
GRO Reference: 1881  S Quarter in CARMARTHEN  Volume 11A  Page 407

AUBREY, RACHEL       age 70
GRO Reference: 1871  J Quarter in LLANELLY  Volume 11A  Page 480

Buried Caersalem

I'n memory of  Rachel Aubrey  From this place who died  May 8th 1871 aged 70years

Followed by a verse from the Old Testament - Proverbs 27 verse1.

Perhaps if you ordered the death certificates, this would give residence at time of death and name of informants which would give more clues. If you go down this route please keep us informed
